Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has jumped to the defence of under-
fire Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri.
Petit feels all the speculation around the Italian's future at Stamford
Bridge has been unfair and insists he has the support of all the players at
the club.
The former Arsenal ace, looking ahead to the UEFA Champions League
showdown between the two London sides, admitted Chelsea would be the top
side in England if it was not for The Gunners.
"The club is having a very satisfying season, and despite all the critics
he has got, Claudio Ranieri has the full support of his players," Petit told
L'Equipe.
"The coach is working without any support from his officials. Considering
the quality of his work, it is not fair play.
"He has made everyone improve, and if you take stock of the season, we
are achieving our best season.
"The problem is that Arsenal are also enjoying their best season. If we
are eliminated by The Gunners from the Champions League, they will be the
only reason for our failure."
Petit also revealed that he feels Arsenal are well ahead of Chelsea in
progression and that the great difference between the two sides is the
support the players get from club officials claiming the set-up at Highbury
is more like a family.
"Here, rivalry never goes beyond sport. There is no PSG-OM. But today,
Arsenal is at another level in English football," added Petit.
"Considering the facilities or the training centre for example, but there
are other differences.
"We can feel more support at Arsenal. Actually it is one of the things
that struck me the most, there is a great difference in the relationship
between the players and the rest of the club.
"At Chelsea, the officials are far away, we don't know who to talk about.
We can only see the officials in the changing room. It is surprising.
"At Arsenal, with Peter Hill-Wood or David Dein, it is more like a
family."
Meanwhile, Craig Rocastle has joined Lincoln City on loan until the end
of the season.
