Emmanuel Petit ended his one-year Barclaycard Premiership exile in
the summer of 2001, when he turned his back on reserve team football with
Barcelona to return to London and a new challenge with Chelsea.
The World Cup and European Championship winner claimed he missed
Premiership football in Spain and turned down reputed offers from other
European clubs to join up with some of his international team-mates at
Stamford Bridge.
Like Patrick Vieira, Petit was a virtual unknown when he first
arrived in the Premiership with Arsenal, but he quickly forged an
unstoppable midfield partnership with Vieira that proved to be one of the
driving forces behind the Gunners' double winning season.
His previous spell in England is best remembered for his tough
tackling approach to the game and constant run-ins with the authorities -
the latter of which he has promised to curb this time around. In his first
season, he made 42 appearances for Chelsea, receiving 4 yellow cards. He
admitted that it took a while for him to settle back into Premiership
football, and life with Chelsea, but his performances later in the season
were key to the Blues' run to the FA Cup final.
He was called up by France at the end of the season to defend their
World Cup in Japan and South Korea, where he would link up with Vieira at
the heart of the midfield again but could not repeat their heroics of four
years previously.
Even as he was in his second season at Stamford Bridge, Petit
admitted that he was yet to win over some of the Chelsea supporters, but
claimed that he was on his way to doing so: "I think Chelsea fans
recognise my work with the team," he said. "I enjoy football and I feel
physically fine, apart from injuries." Helping them to the Champions
League may have done his popularity some good.
