Chelsea finally ended a two-year quest and completed the signing of
Dutch international winger Boudewijn Zenden from Barcelona for £7.5
million in August 2001. The Blues announced that the 24-year-old had
signed a four-year deal.
Zenden became Chelsea's fourth major summer signing following the
arrivals of William Gallas, Emmanuel Petit and Frank Lampard.
He had become a peripheral figure at the Nou Camp with fellow
Dutchman Marc Overmars ahead of him for the left-wing berth.
Zenden made 36 appearances for Chelsea in his first season in the
Premiership, but was not the success he would have hoped. He suffered a
freak injury in January 2002, in a challenge with Teddy Sheringham, which
took him out of action until April. Doctors likened his injury to a
gunshot wound.
Zenden also suffered disappointment in his international career with
Holland, who failed to qualify for the World Cup. His future at Stamford
Bridge was uncertain after the 2002/03 season when his place in the team
became less and less assured despite a good start to the campaign.
The Russian revolution at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2003 was
the deathknell to Zenden's career there, as a whole new attacking midfield
quartet arrived, and he left to join Middlesbrough early in the new season,
hoping to make more of a consistent impact there.
