Chelsea's new signing Neil Sullivan is still the number one keeper
for Scotland despite losing the number one jersey at club level during his
time with Tottenham Hotspur. Despite that, after leaving Wimbledon in the
summer of 2000, he put in some vital performances for Spurs, having been
somewhat of a coup for George Graham, who signed the player for free on a b
osman transfer.
Fans and players alike at the club expected 'Sully' to be the number 2
choice keeper, but he had other ideas. Hard work and commitment earned the
Scot a chance in the first team and he firmly grasped it with both hands.
From then on he never looked back and firmly established the number one
jersey as his own, with England international Ian Walker forced to sit on
the bench.
After Kasey Keller's arrival at the club, Sullivan had to fight
harder than ever for a place in the team. Unfortunately at the end of the
2001/2002 campaign he suffered an injury that put him out for three months
after a freak accident in pre-season training. Then, not long after he'd
returned to fitness, he broke his thumb leaving the door wide open for
Keller.
Despite regaining fitness towards the end of 2002/03, Sullivan was
unable to win back his place from the USA international. Just before the
transfer deadline at the end of August 2003, he left Spurs and joined
Chelsea, though with so many other keepers already at Stamford Bridge, it
is difficult to see how this will advance his first team chances.
