Jurgen Macho is a towering young Austrian goalkeeper who moved to
Sunderland on a free transfer from FC Vienna during the summer of 2000 and
soon had the chance to show his quality. Injury to Sorensen at the start
of the 2000-01 season meant that Reid called on Macho sooner than expected
and the Austrian did not disappoint making several world class saves in
the games in which he played.
A regular in the Austrian U-21 side, Macho hopes to challenge
Arsenal's Alex Manninger for the Austrian No.1 jersey in the foreseeable
future.
Despite a disastrous season for the Black Cats, 2002/03 gave Macho
the perfect chance to shine when Sorensen was out injured. He performed
miracles to earn Sunderland a 0-0 draw at Anfield and was equally
impressive at Old Trafford.
However, when he lost his place again despite his form, it became
clear that he would leave the Stadium of Light, and Chelsea snapped him up
in June 2003, though he will still face a battle for regular football.
