Romanian international striker Adrian Mutu joined Chelsea in the summer of
2003, one of the many top class players brought to the club by the millions
spent by new owner Roman Abramovich.

The prolific Mutu had been one of the most highly-rated players in Serie A in
the 2002/03 season, when he scored 17 goals in 31 games for Parma, and it took
nearly ￡16m to pry him away.

He began his career in 1996 with hometown club Arges Pitesti, with whom he
stayed for three years, his longest spell at any club so far. In 1999 he
joined Dinamo Bucharest, where he was a revelation, scoring 18 goals in 18
games.

Unsurprisingly, bigger clubs were alerted to his talent and he only stayed at
Dinamo for a few months before signing for Internazionale. However, that move
did not last long either, and he was soon shipped off to Verona.

In his two years there, he became more settled in Serie A and when he joined

a similar effect in the Barclaycard Premiership.
