Like a dog with a bone, Fitzchiv is still going on about Majeta Kezman.
Maybe Jose has been listening after all........
For the third time, I’m writing about Mateja Kezman. On previous
occasions I requested patience and faith in our little Serb, and upon
seeing his name in the starting line-up against Manchesters’
fabourite team, I genuinely thought it could be his time to step up and
be counted.
Let's get it out of the way first, THAT miss. Ok, he’s a paid striker,
bred on poaching goals and he missed a sitter. There’s no excuse other
than the ball met his shin rather than instep. It was bad luck there was
no time to react, it was pure instinct.
But I ask you this. On the day who, out of Eidur and Kez, looked the
better forward? Better maybe isn't the correct word, as both were poor,
but as I've highlighted before, Eidur is going through one of his ‘off
patches’ and is infuriating us all as he is to himself.
Didi, thank God, will be back against Everton all being well, and should
give us the ruthlessness we need up front.
But get used to seeing more of Kezman!
Upon signing him Jose outlined what he liked about Kezman ‘He’s a great
goal scorer, can play at the front, or come in off the right. He has great
work ethic and works for the team’. Out of these qualities we’ve seen
two out of four, namely the effort based virtues.
But with the frustrating crippling of Robben against Blackburn (who I now
hope go down) means there is a place up for grabs in the next 4-6 matches.
In the running are Kezman, Eidur and Cole.
Eidur will have to wake up, and fast, if he’s to take a place in the
line-up to support Didi and fill Robbens' boots, and to be honest he’s
just not the player. Cole, as we all know, is capable of great
performances, even playing within himself as against ‘Boro, but again,
inconsistency is his downfall, and I sense a new rift with Jose recently,
being summed up by his being an embarrassingly subbed-sub against Blackburn.
That leaves Kezman. Now I've sat back and taken flack for supporting
this guy, and no doubt I will do so again in reading the feedback to this
article, but even the most casual football fan knows a player needs games,
minutes and support, to do well. Kez has only had the support out of that
list.
Am I the only one who sees the fact he’s just lacking his edge? His
turn and shot on the run, left footed, testing Calamity against City was
more like the Kezman I believe is in there. His run onto a ball in the
box, right hand side, and good effort, once again saved by James, is
another example. Full blooded challenges, battling and even being penalised
for being too PHYSICAL where what Kezman gave us against City.
No, his performance wasn’t as good as we’d want, but look at it for
what it is, please?
Those of you who play football know as well as I do that a full 90 minutes
in a team doing well, partnered with a good performance, is a massive
shot in the arm for any player at any level.
While Eidur lets frustration take over his game, Kezman has kept quiet,
not once speaking out at his lack of opportunity, and waited. Those fans
at the Bridge chanting ‘Come on Kezman’ - well done, that’s what he
needs. He’s going to be playing more in the next few matches.
You Kezman bashers out there are going to have to swallow the fact he’s
been a big disappointment, and just support the guy as a Chelsea player.
And you never know, he might just come good.
