Mateja Kezman
One of two attacking forces purchased from PSV Eindhoven in the
summer (the other being Arjen Robben), Mateja is a Serbian international
whose goalscoring record during his four years in Holland was more than a
match for many Dutch legends of the past, Marco van Basten and Ruud van
Nistelrooy included.
Quick and with an ability to find the net from all angles, he can
play wide on the right as well as lead the attack. Experienced at
Champions League level too, Mateja caught the eye by scoring past Man
United four years ago.
Prior to his Dutch experience, his was an itinerant career in his
native land before making his name at Partizan Belgrade where he became
league top scorer, persuading PSV to spend a healthy £7 million on the 21
year-old in July 2000.
After a few fallow weeks he caught fire with that Man United goal and
by the end of the season was top scorer in Holland with 24 goals, a
position he would again fill in two of the next three seasons, the totals
increasing to 35 and 31.
Following a bright pre-season, Mateja's early Chelsea career was
mostly substitute duty and it took 13 appearances to find the net. But as
his start in Holland showed, you write this proven goalscorer off at your
peril.
Scored in the Carling Cup Final.
