NEW START, NEW NAMES, NEW CHALLENGES

New recruit Steve Sidwell has been talking as he begins life as a Blue.

Monday morning marks the start of the pre-season for the Chelsea first
team squad and with that begin in earnest some new Chelsea careers. Steve
Sidwell, the free transfer addition to the midfield, is one of those
players and is expected to be in match action as early as Saturday when
his new team contests the Disney Friendship Cup match versus Club America.

Today may be the day he joins up with the squad but Sidwell has already
given his first interview since joining Chelsea from Reading. It was to
Chelsea TV and covered among other subjects his decision in 2003 to leave
Arsenal and drop down a division, his England Under 21 career and his
leadership qualities.

But first it dealt with just how small a distance his career has now taken
him, having been born just over the Thames from Stamford Bridge in the
Borough of Wandsworth.

'Arsenal grabbed me as a young kid and I signed my allegiances to them so
you [Chelsea] just missed out,' the 24-year-old explained. 'I believe
Chelsea looked at me but once I was fixed at Arsenal, I wasn't moving.

'The youth team that we had at Arsenal was fantastic and a lot of great
players we had there have gone on to make careers for themselves. We won
the FA Youth Cup comfortably really but my Arsenal days were cut short not
long after that really.

'I could have stayed. I sat down with Mr Wenger and he said: "You can stay
if you want and sign a new contract but I can't guarantee when you're
going to play and if you're going to play."

'He advised me to go out to Reading and seek first team opportunities and
play and show people what I can do. So I've got the utmost respect for him
for being honest with me. I took a step down on the ladder to come back
and I've finally done that. Signing for Reading was probably one of the
best things that could've happened to me at the time. Another great
stepping stone in my career.'

Sidwell had never played in the Arsenal first team but after joining the
Royals, he became an England Under 21 international.

'I got Man of the Match for my debut which was special,' he recalls. 'To
pull the three lions on will go down as one of the best moments in my
life. At that level it was brilliant and if I can hopefully do it at the
biggest stage then fantastic.'

As well as signing someone who Sidwell himself describes as a box-to-box
midfielder that can get on the score sheet, Chelsea have also gained
another leader. At Reading he was the club's youngest ever captain.

'When things aren't going right on the pitch or even off the pitch I'm one
to really rally the troops and to get their spirits back up. I am noisy. I
like to push players on and get the best out of them, even if I'm not
having the best of games myself.'

Now the new addition faces the stiff challenge of impressing Jose Mourinho
enough for a regular place in the Chelsea midfield, starting with the very
first training session on Tuesday.

'After speaking to the manager, he did say I was going to get a chance and
I wasn't here simply to make up the numbers. All I want is an opportunity
to play at the highest level that I can. He said I'll get that here and
hopefully I'll take that with both hands.'
