'Lay off Ranieri', urges Gudjohnsen
Eidur Gudjohnsen has called for the critics to get off the back of
Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri and allow him to get on with his job.
Blues boss Ranieri is under constant pressure to deliver a trophy
this season after spending £121 million of billionaire owner Roman
Abramovich's money on rebuilding his squad, and there is continued
speculation that he will be replaced in the summer.
The past fortnight has seen Chelsea crash out of the FA Cup and slip
nine points behind leaders Arsenal in the race for the Premiership. However
, Ranieri's men are still going strong in the Champions League and are
favourites to reach the last 16 after Wednesday's impressive 1-0 victory
in Stuttgart.
Icelandic striker Gudjohnsen came to the defence of his manager and
said: 'People should get off his back and let him do his job - it would be
a lot easier for us all if they did.
'We'll see at the end of the season what happens - if anything - and it
has all been going on for too long. The good thing is, I don't think he
lets anything get to him, which is a positive, especially for the team.
'We don't feel as if he is under pressure, he just gets on with his
job as usual. In any case, it is not only the manager who is under pressure
- we are all under pressure to perform and we are all in this together.'
Strike partner Hernan Crespo made a return from injury and illness in
Wednesday's win and he believes pressure is all part of the challenge for
success.
The Argentinian said: 'This is football, it is normal. If you want to
play in a great team and you want to play in the Champions League and the
Premiership and fight to win something then you have pressure. It is normal
and it is a beautiful problem.
'I believe we are building something here. In the first month nobody
knew each other but now it is better, and it is important that we have calm
minds.'
Gudjohnsen also insisted that Chelsea, who visit Manchester City on
Saturday, had not yet given up hope of the title.
He added: 'We are disappointed to have lost to Arsenal last weekend
because it was a very important three points, but we are silently hopeful
that if we can put a string of results together then Arsenal will start
dropping a few points and we shall still be in with a chance.'
