Khalid Boulahrouz
With the 2006/7 season just one day old, the squad was boosted by the
signing of Dutch international defender Khalid Boulahrouz on a three-year
contract.

The 24 year-old arrived for an undisclosed fee from Hamburg SV where he

His parents are of Moroccan descent, their son born in Holland and
involved in youth football at several clubs including Ajax. However with
none of the large outfits willing to retain him, Khalid began his
professional career at little-known RKC Waalwijk where current Tottenham
boss Martin Jol was his coach. He played two seasons making 64 starts and
four sub appearances.

He then moved to Hamburg where his form prompted Marco van Basten to
select the defender for the Dutch national side. He made his debut against
Liechtenstein in September 2004.

Six foot tall and mobile, Khalid by then had earned a reputation as a
defender who can play anywhere along the backline. This attracted Chelsea
and although centre-back is his preferred position and he favours his
right-foot, Jose Mourinho has declared his willingness to field him in
either full-back position or, in an emergency, as a defensive midfielder.
