Ben Haim waiting for Chelsea offer

Chelsea were last night considering whether to counter bids by West Ham United
and Portsmouth to sign Tal Ben Haim from Bolton. The 25-year-old is understood
to have received strong encouragement in the last few days that his dream move
to Stamford Bridge might happen after all and is now stalling on the offers
already tabled by the other two Premiership clubs.

Ben Haim can play at full-back as well as in central defence. Mourinho would
prefer him to the Brazilian Alex although discussions are advanced to bring
the PSV Eindhoven defender to Chelsea. The only snag could be securing a work
permit.

available from Deportivo La Coruna, who are suffering severe financial problems,
but the fee of around ￡10m is more than Chelsea want to pay. Andrade has also
been offered to Barcelona.
