HAPPY TO BE BLUE
Just six weeks into his Stamford Bridge career and as he prepares to face
Liverpool today, Tal Ben-Haim is already well adjusted to what it means to be
a Chelsea player.
The Israeli signed over the summer on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers,
and has quickly adapted to the expectations of manager Jos? Mourinho and his
back room staff.
With injuries throughout the squad, Ben-Haim has had to quickly settle in the
side, emphasised by Wednesday's victory over Reading, where he was forced to
lead an unfamiliar back four to a second-half clean sheet that ensured a 2-1
win.
'It's not something I didn't used to do in the past. It's the same, not my
first year in the Premier League,' he says modestly.
'I know the teams, the players, so of course I need to speak more and
organise more, its part of the job so nothing new.'
Since joining from Bolton, Ben-Haim has played every minute of our three
games so far, and is expected to keep his place alongside captain John Terry
for today's visit to Anfield.
He already feels a part of the family here at Chelsea, and feels he owes
plenty to Terry for making him feel welcome.
'I think John Terry is a fantastic player, captain of the club. He has helped
me settle in, helped me with everything. He's a very important player for the
team, and hopefully against Liverpool we'll see how important he is.
'Even if it's with the car, the house, with everything. With the players, in
training. We speak and connect very well. He's not only a fantastic
footballer, but character and a leader. We need him fit for the season.'
With such help, it's little surprise Ben-Haim feels so at home around the
club.
'Of course, when joining in I see we have good team spirit. We train hard
together, especially in pre season. Its part of that as well, not only about
good players, it's about good family.'
Having moved on from Wanderers, Ben-Haim is reluctant to talk about his time
there, but does concede that joining the Blues is a step up for him, and one
he is eager to make the most of.
'It's not my job to speak about Bolton now, I can't speak about their place,
I don't know what's going on there now, it's better to ask the people there,'
he says.
Chelsea, he says, has a 'different mentality. You play with top players so
the first option is to win every title. You know before you sign when you
come to play Chelsea, you know it's a massive club.
'If you get a result or even a draw you've done a terrific job against them.
Even if you play really good with Bolton against Chelsea it's sometimes not
enough because Chelsea are much better.'
。"
It's no secret that Mourinho had tried to sign the defender in January to
cover his mounting injury crisis, but Ben-Haim dismisses the suggestion it
was a relief to finally arrive.
'I don't think in that way. I just want to come here and improve my ability,
to play for a big team, with big players.
'Of course I wanted to come in January, but I was in contract, so if they
want me to stay I can do nothing about it.
'I always want to play every game the manager lets me play. I want to do my
best, like every footballer.'
Today's game with Liverpool is the first of a few tough fixtures coming up,
including an international date with England at Wembley.
Despite the banter in training with his English team mates, he prefers to
remain focused on the game immediately in front of him, and stopping
countryman Yossi Benayoun taking any points from him.
'He's a very good player, but it's about 11 players, not only about specific
players. It's going to be a hard game for both sides,' he says diplomatically.
'I know we want to win every title as a club, you want to win every game.
'Liverpool, I'm not part of Liverpool, I'm part of Chelsea. They're a good
team but we go to our job, not think about what Liverpool players or manager
think. It's not our business, we just look after our team and we want to do
our best for the club.'
Ben-Haim is also keen to do his best for his father Manuel, who is his main
mentor.
'He loves to look after me all the time, and comes to training in Israel as
much as he can. He is my adviser and looks after me,' he says, and he'll be
hoping to repay some of his father's faith with a clean sheet up at Anfield
today.
'Chelsea want every game to keep a clean sheet, every game to win,' he
explains. He certainly has learned the Mourinho way.
