Chelsea beat a host of clubs to the signature of this young Icelandic
international in the summer of 2000. One of the best players in the First
division in the 1999/2000 season, Gudjohnsen scored over 20 goals as
Bolton again narrowly missed out on promotion.
As a player, Gudjohnsen still has a lot to learn but he is very quick
and links up play very well, apart from being an accomplished finisher. As
a teenager he had a brief spell as Ronaldo's strike partner at Ajax which
ended when he broke his ankle. Following a brief spell back in his
homeland, he was picked up by Bolton and enjoyed two successful seasons in
the North West.
In his first season at Chelsea, Gudjohnsen took his chance at first
team football when it came, and forged a formidable partnership with Jimmy
Floyd Hasselbaink. In 48 appearances, Gudjohnsen scored 23 goals, helping
the Blues get to the FA Cup final.
However, the partnership faltered through injury problems and loss of
form in 2002/03. Gudjohnsen scored just 10 goals all season and hit the
headlines for the wrong reasons when he admitted a gambling addiction. He
will hope to get back on track in 2003/04.
