簡述--
Somewhat controversially, Webb was not retained on a permanent basis as the
player-manager's position went to Glenn Hoddle who had fulfilled the same
position at newly-promoted Swindon Town. Hoddle's play (1 goal 3 assists) did
little to lift the team, however. He started the first 14 games after which
time the team was in an unhealthy 18th place. Throughout his career at Chelsea
the team only managed 9 wins during his 31 appearances.
After a horrendous spell of 2 points out of a possible 33 and a period of one
goal in 660 minutes, Mark Stein came to the rescue. With a premier record goal
in each of seven consecutive games the team recovered and was in no danger of
relegation thereafter. The highlight of the season was the double over
champions Manchester United. Over the years they have given the Red Devil's
more trouble than any other team and currently almost match them goal for goal
The team's star was Wise, at the peak of his form with 17 assists and a career
low 2 cards and one dismissal. Until recently he lead the side in all
categories, appearances, goals, assists and bookings, during the Premiership
years
