Several doubts after internationals
Friday, Sep 09, 2005
Jose Mourinho revealed that he has four players with knocks on
returning from international duty who will force him to make some late
decisions on his team selection for tomorrow’s visit of Sunderland.
“A lot of knocks, but that’s part of top games. Ireland-France. They
come back with some knocks from hard games. But now they come back they
have to think about Chelsea.
“It’s possible I have some problems. Makelele, Duff, Joe Cole, del
Horno, John Terry stay with us, work a lot to recover. Tomorrow or Tuesday
he will be back. If he is not playing we have enough, we have four
internationals. If he is not playing he is our captain, he will miss him,
but we have enough.”
He dismissed the idea that players with different successes and
failures in midweek and last weekend would have trouble on focussing on
Chelsea now. Indeed, he thinks that is simple.
“Easy. Very easy. Now we have to think about Chelsea. In October they
have to forget about Chelsea and think about their national teams. It’s
easy.”
But once in his pre-match press conference the nationally related
questions started, particularly about England and Sven-Goran Eriksson, he
played with the kind of straight bat that some of England’s cricketers
would have been happy in retrospect employing yesterday.
“I like the national teams of my players to win, so when they play
between them, for example Ivory Coast and Cameroon, I just watch my players
and hope they play well and come back safe. At the end I am happy because
Geremi won and very unhappy because Didier Drogba lost.
“I was very happy with Holland, with Portugal, unhappy with England,
unhappy with Spain, and so on and so on. That’s my life in international
fixtures.”
The bat got straighter when the question of Frank Lampard’s form and
Sven-Goran Eriksson’s statements on him were aired.
“One thing is form in the national team, another is his form in the
club. For form in the national team Mr Eriksson talks and I listen. His
form in the club, I speak and Mr Eriksson is always respecting that. I am
happy with his form for Chelsea. I don’t speak about England.”
On whether Lampard and Steven Gerrard can play together, he replied:
“It’s not a question for me anymore. He has signed a long-term contract
with Liverpool and I am not trying to sign him anymore.”
On why Chelsea can play 4-3-3 so well with the inference that England
can’t: “We have players to play that system. We work since 14 or 15
months to play that way. The players are happy with that system, they feel
comfortable. I don’t think there is a perfect system, every system has
qualities and weaknesses, and what a manager has to do is hide those
weaknesses.”
On Glen Johnson coming back from England Under 21s: “I receive
written explanation from the FA saying the player is injured. I think he is
a top professional.”
And, finally, on Sunderland: “They are better than zero points. I saw
the matches, I analysed. The players saw today they are not a team for
zero points. They played at Liverpool and were very comfortable. They will
come here and play compact, try to counter-attack. It will not be easy.”
