High scoring Anderlecht go top

Anderlecht, our UEFA Champions League opponents on Tuesday, went top of the
Belgian League last night with a 3-1 home win.

Standard Liege, who were top in the morning, do not play until today, Sunday.

Watched by Chelsea scout Andre Villas, the Serbian and Montenegrin striker
Nenad Je?trovic opened the scoring ten minutes before half-time, and restored
the lead four minutes after it. Opponents Mouscron, two from the bottom of the
League, had equalised after two minutes.

Mbo Mpenza (right in the photograph), signed in the summer, hit a late third.
He is the League’s top scorer with seven. Je?trovic has four.

Anderlecht have been a free scoring team this season. They opened the campaign
with a 6-0 victory over La Louviere. Mpenza got the first goal. Turkish striker
Serhat Akin (left in the photograph) struck two with the others coming from
three midfielders, the Swede Par Zetterberg, the Belgian Bart Goor, and the
Romanian Marius Mitu.

Next up was a 2-0 win at Cercle Brugge with a penalty by Serhat and another
Mpenza goal. A 3-1 home win over Beerschot saw the first two goals by Je?trovic
including a penalty, while Mpenza got his standard strike.

Their only dropped points came in a 3-3 draw at Genk. Mpenza put Anderlecht two
up, Genk came back to 2-2, Mpenza completed his hat-trick, but Mpenza equalised
again.
