Internationals in action for Reserves
Wednesday, Sep 21, 2005
Tonight at Watford, Chelsea will field our most experienced reserve
side since beating West Ham 5-1 away exactly one year ago.
Six members of the current first team squad, including three full
internationals, will start the game. Wayne Bridge recommences his comeback
from a broken leg, temporarily halted by a minor foot injury, and will play
his second reserve game of the season.
In addition there is important action for Glen Johnson, also back from
injury, plus four players yet to start a first team game this season,
Robert Huth, Carlton Cole, summer-signed midfielder Lassana Diarra and
keeper Lenny Pidgeley who will travel to the club where he played 29 first
team games two seasons back.
Adding to the experience of the side that will run out at Vicarage
Road are two young players who have both made their Chelsea debuts,
centre-back Steven Watt and midfielder Joe Keenan, back from a month loan
at Brentford that followed on from his extensive 18 month spell in Belgium.
In contrast, the team will also contain 17 year-old James Simmonds and
18 year-old Jimmy Smith.
Tonight’s game is the third of the season for the second string after
a three-week break. The last outing was a much improved draw at Southampton
after an opening home defeat by Spurs.
Watford have been struggling. The Hornets have lost all four of their
games so far, conceding nine goals and scoring just once.
In goal and aiming to prevent a first Chelsea win of the season will
be James Beasant, nephew of former Chelsea keeper Dave. Continuing the
famous relatives theme, on the bench for the Hornets with be Aaron
Ferdinand, son of Les and one of four academy-aged subs.
In the wake of a Carling Cup tie last night, Watford will be fielding
a young side. It’s rolls reversed from the majority Chelsea reserve games
of recent years!
The corresponding fixture last season ended in a 1-0 win for Watford.
The Chelsea team tonight is:
Lenny Pidgeley
Glen Johnson Robert Huth Steven Watt Wayne Bridge
Danny Hollands (capt) Lassana Diarra Joe Keenan
James Simmonds Jimmy Smith
Carlton Cole
Subs:
Yves Ma Kalambay, Adrian Pettigrew, Joe Tillen, Jonas Elmer,
Phil Younghusband.
Watford:
Beasant, Osborne, Mariappe, O’Toole, Griffiths, O’Cearuill, Parkes,
Gill, Grant, Matthews, Bardle.
Subs: Homand, McCoy, Robinson, Ferdinand.
The game is at Vicarage Road, kick-off 7pm. There is live coverage on
Chelsea TV, broadcasting starts at 6-45pm. Hosted by Catherine Quested,
Kerry Dixon will provide an expert eye from the studio with Dan Roebuck and
Clive Walker commentating. Neil Barnett will be reporting from Vicarage
Road.
