Chelsea Reserves had the better of a reserve friendly in Paris on
Friday evening, but with no recognised striker failed to finish off the
French side.
A five-day pre-season camp in Le Havre climaxed with a journey to
the French capital where coach Mick McGiven again experimented with his
new shape of two holding midfielders, two attacking midfielders and two
wingers ahead of the back four, meaning no striker at all.
Against Hanwell Town the reserves won 7-1. In Paris they were
unlucky not to win. Right-winger Filipe Morais hit the post when through
one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and central defender Adrian Pettigrew had
a header cleared off the line following a corner.
“We played on the counter-attack, trying to get used to the system,”
said Mick, “and in the second-half we knocked the ball around very well.
“Our midfield players all played well, Grant, Hollands, Smith and Keenan,
and up front Morais did really well on the right.”
This wasn’t just any pre-season camp, it was a very special one.
“It was the first time ever the reserves have been out of the country as
a group,” Mick said. “It was a good trip, we were in a nice place, very
picturesque, but with not much to do which is great for pre-season, so we
trained well morning and afternoon and had a great five days finishing
with a good performance.”
The next reserve pre-season friendly is on Tuesday at Dorchester
Town, July 26th, kick-off 7.45pm.
