Chelsea Reserves lost just their second game of the season last night,
Wednesday, going down to two late goals from Coventry. It was a poor start,
with the hosts scoring in the first minute, experienced right-sided
midfielder Andy Morrell finishing unmarked.
Coventry had players with first team experience in their line-up,
including Andy Impey at right-back. But Chelsea equalised soon after half-
time when Phil Younghusband headed in Je Tillen’s cross. It was his
second goal of the season.
Coach Mick McGiven said: “We played some pretty football and created
a couple of chances. James Younghusband had a one on one with the
goalkeeper, and we got a free-kick two yards from the line after a pass
back and how that didn’t go in I’ll never know. It was cleared off the
line, there was a big melee and we finished up getting a booking.”
In all. Dean Smith, Anthony Grant and Filipe Morais were booked in
separate incidents. A Coventry player was booked for fouling Morais.
Coventry retook the lead ten minutes from the end. Mick called it: “a
sloppy goal from a free-kick.” Five minutes later another free-kick was
deflected to their centre-forward who scored.
“Our strong point all season has been our defence,” said Mick, “but
they had an awkward centre-forward, the six feet three inches Baz Savage,
and on every set play they looked dangerous.”
Danny Hollands returned from his groin operation at half-time, going
up front with James Younghusband dropping to right-back. When Shaun
Cummings went on the team switched to 4-4-2. When Jack Cork went on for
the last few minutes he was playing against his father Alan who was in
charge of the Coventry side.
