Despite right-back Dean Smith scoring his first goal of the season
to get Chelsea back into the game, two goals in two minutes gave Charlton
victory at Aldershot FC last night, Monday.
Chelsea were without Lenny Pidgeley, away with the first team in
Seville, on loan Steven Watt and injured Jimmy Smith. At half-time they
were down to a goal from 20 yards which was struck in after a Charlton
free-kick on the right had deflected off the wall.
The poor first-half performance was followed by a much sharper
opening to the second-half, and Smith was the third man running on the
end of a good movement to get through and equalise five minutes after the
break.
Not long after he repeated the move, but this time his shot struck
the keeper. Quickly Charlton went down the other end and suddenly were
two goals in front. Lisbie got between the centre-halves and looped a
long-range header over Ma Kalambay, and a minute later another free header
made it 3-1.
Danny Hollands got through on goal but failed to get a goal back,
then James Simmonds did the same and rode a rough challenge in the area
but couldn’t score. Filipe Morais shot over when well placed, and Phil
Younghusband broke into the area twice, the second time the ball
rebounding to Simmonds who, with two defenders backing to the line but
the goalkeeper stranded, failed to hit the target.
It wasn’t Chelsea’s night.
