Chelsea Youth took their goalscoring exploits to 11 in two games
with their win over Reading on Friday morning. They beat Rushden &
Diamonds 6-1 in their first pre-season game.
Coach Brendan Rodgers said: We’ve addressed the goals thing this
year, we’re scoring plenty and it’s been really good so far.”
Young Lee Sawyer opened the scoring before striker signing Scott
Sinclair added a second. Reading pulled one back and at half-time the
score was 2-1.
Hamze Ismail scored the third just after the interval, Reading
pulled one back again and then came the top moment of the game. “We had
perfect link-up play,” Brendan explained. “A good period of passing,
then good individual play by Jack Watkins who slipped in Ben Saha who
went round the keeper and finished in style, capping off a perfect
performance. It was all against a much older team, they had five first
years in the first-half.
The fifth goal was scored by Watkins. “I’m extremely pleased with
the overall performance,” said Brendan. “It was only our second game
and the quality of our football was high, our understanding of the system
was excellent for this stage, and importantly our fitness levels showed
up well.”
The team now prepares to fly to the Milk Cup Under 18s tournament in
Northern Ireland. They play Co Tyrone on Monday and Feyenoord on Tuesday.
