Chelsea’s youth team progressed to the quarter-final of the Milk
Cup in Northern Ireland tonight, Tuesday, thanks to a first-half strike
from Academy boy Shaun Cummings.
The 16 year old first year scholar striker, who has been with
Chelsea since the Under 12s age group, hit a 20 yard shot into the bottom
corner. “Great finish,” purred coach Brendan Rodgers, “left foot!”
Playing on a daily basis is obviously very demanding, but that is
how this tournament is structured. Games have been 70 minutes long to
take this into account. Brendan was delighted with this win against the
Dutch giants. “The spirit of the boys was excellent, they worked really
hard. It was the fourth game of pre-season, four wins, 14 goals and two
clean sheets out here. We’re doing alright!”
Schoolboys involved in this game were Rhys Taylor, Nana Ofori, Joe
Anderson and Lee Sawyer.
The boys play Mexican side Cruz Azul in the quarter-final tomorrow,
and success could lead to a semi-final against Porto.
