Chelsea Youth will face Barcelona in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup
Final after beating Porto 5-4 on penalties in the semi-final having drawn
2-2. Barcelona beat Mancheter United 2-1.
Schoolboy goalkeeper Rhys Taylor saved the tenth penalty of the
shoot-out after nine successful ones in an extraordinary climax to the
semi-final.
Porto had taken the lead, but Scott Sinclair equalised with a great
left-footed finish from six yards following Shaun Cummings’ fine cross.
Dean Furman then secured the lead with a strong nine-yard volley
when Porto couldn’t clear Ryan Bertrand’s dangerous cross.
It looked all over, but Porto equalised three-and-a-half minutes
into stoppage time.
And so it went to penalties. Chelsea took first, and Sinclair, Toni
Saarlema, Furman, Michael Mancienne and Nuno Ofori scored to give Chelsea
the lead five times. Taylor’s save protected that lead and Chelsea are
in the Final.
Unfortunately, Furman suffered a second booking in consecutive games
and is currently suspended from the Final. But coach Brendan Rodgers is
appealing.
Brendan was elated with the performance. “We’ve shown over the
last two games our reslience and willingness to fight for each other.
Imagine the pshychological down when they equalised and we could have
been three, four ahead. And then the five penalties were all top class.
Fantastic!”
The week has progressed with wins against Co Tyrone (2-0) on
Monday, Ferenoord (1-0) on Tuesday, Cruz Azul (1-0) on Wednesday, and now
Porto on Thursday.
It’s Chelsea vs Barcelona in the Final on Friday, kick-off 5.30pm.
This is Chelsea’s first year in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup, the
biggest youth club competition in the world. Games are 70 minutes.
