Chelsea came into the match on the back of two draws, and found themselves two down to West Ham after 15 minutes. To be fair the goals were screamers, shots from 30 yards and 25, but coach Brendan Rodgers wasn’t happy. “The performance was very poor in the first-half. It was everything we haven’t been up until now. Defensively we had no pressure, no aggression, we sat too deep. Offensively there was no quality in our passing, we weren’t clever enough on the ball.” Yet it should have been 2-1 at half-time when, with just a couple of minutes to go to the interval, schoolboy Nano Ofori won a race with the Hammers goalkeeper for the ball and was brought down. However, Scott Sinclair’s penalty was saved. It was Chelsea’s second penalty miss in a row, the second in five games. At half-time, attacking midfielder Simmonds, who has been struggling with a knee injury, was sent on. “He was the spark,” said Brendan, “he provided much needed penetration.” Jack Watkins got a goal back midway through the half, cutting inside from the left and firing under the keeper for his second goal of the season. But the equaliser would not come. “I was proud of the second-half performance,” Brendan said, “and how they kept themselves in the game. The last three performances have been okay, that’s all, and it’s important now to go back to doing what we do very well. It will be good test of that next week against Arsenal.” Dean Furman suffered Chelsea’s only yellow card. Left-back Ryan Bertrand and striker Shaun Cummings were still both missing with mumps.
