Look at it this way - Shots good, goals must get better

Neil Barnett has been writing, editing and broadcasting for Chelsea for
over 20 years. This week he celebrates a ten year best in shots on target,
but longs for more goals.

Chelsea had more shots on target against Portsmouth on Saturday than in
any other game under Jose Mourinho. Indeed, the team had more shots on

the best in Mourinho's first season, 12 at home to Crystal Palace (a 4-1
win).

Reading in a 1-0 League Cup victory. The year before that it was 13 in the
4-0 FA Cup win at Shrewsbury. In 2001/02 the record was 14 again, against
Hapoel Tel-Aviv in the home 1-1 draw which led to Uefa Cup elimination,
and at home to West Ham in a wonderful 5-1 victory.

Hasselbaink scored four.

In no game in the last ten years have Chelsea struck more than 15.
Saturday's was a memorable attacking performance.

Indeed, creatively the last three home games have been exceptional
performances. But only one chance was taken against each of Aston Villa

security of points.’

Arjen Robben needs a goal. His last one for Chelsea was back in February,
ironically against Portsmouth at home last season. Mourinho feels he is
nearing the top of his powers in his game, and almost apologised for
substituting him, but stressed that Joe Cole needed time on the pitch
following his injury.

performance was perhaps overlooked.

was man of the match.

The reality is that at Chelsea he plays always very, very well, and with
amazing motivation. He's special!’

So we're playing some fine football, especially when stretched by fine
opposition, but we're not scoring enough. It makes for top entertainment,
but it's not good for the heart. Now we have four away games on the spin.

The next Premier League opponents at Stamford Bridge will be Watford on 11

Cup third round replay. We scored four goals from seven shots on target.
That's a ratio which would be worth repeating — whether we can get near
the 15 on target in total or not.

下次在主場的英超比賽是11月11日對陣沃特福德。上次和他們交手還要追溯到2004年
足總盃第三輪重賽，我們只有七腳射正，卻進了四球，希望這種效率能重來一次 －
無論我們是否還有15腳射正。
