Our Wednesday columnist celebrates the intrigue in that great football
tradition - a load of balls, a helping hand and a cup draw.

Nottingham Forest at home in the FA Cup fourth round, then. The draw was
relatively kind to us. Makes a change. Given that Liverpool weren't an
option, I fully expected us to get Barcelona.

我本來以為會抽到巴賽羅納的
I don't know about you, but when it comes to cup draws, I have separate
policies, depending on the competition. If it's the knock-out stages of
the Champions League, I want us to draw the biggest team available. Because
that's what it's about, isn't it?
不知道各位怎麼想的 但對我來說 對於盃賽抽籤我有兩種不同制度 如果是冠軍盃淘汰賽
我能猜到那會是想像程度內的最強對手 事實也是如此呈現的
It's about coming up against Real Madrid, say, rather than the side that
scraped into fourth place in your domestic league, 30 points off the pace, in
the previous season. Because then, if you lose, at least there is some dignity
in it.
所以是會抽到皇馬? 至少比那隻去年在聯賽裡用爬的到第四名 落後榜首30分的隊伍好
因為這樣如果不小心輸球了(輸給皇馬) 至少還能保有一些尊嚴
If it's the Carling or the FA Cup, on the other hand, I want a home tie
against the weakest team remaining in the competition. The weaker the
better. Because that, also, is what it's about, isn't it?
但是如果是米老鼠盃或是足總盃 我就希望能收到最弱的對手 越弱越好 而事實也就如此
呈現 不是嗎?
And if their goalkeeper gets sent off along the way, and they don't have a
spare, then so much the merrier.
然後如果她們的門將被罰出場 又沒有替補門將 那又更美好了
I know, I know - it doesn't look all that great, written down. And I heard all
the arguments ahead of Saturday's third round tie against Macclesfield.

I know their entire team was assembled for less than the cost of John Terry's
in-car stereo; I know about the British and their 'innate' love for the

I'm not pretending it's classy, and I'm not saying you emerge with extra

Forest, of course, are far from the weakest side left in the FA Cup. Indeed,
you could argue that this would have been a handier moment to meet, for

shipping goals and points like it's going out of fashion, looking to a
costly striker who is hopelessly unable to score, and dependent for its
future in the FA Cup upon a 35-year-old loan signing and a last minute
howler by an overdressed goalkeeper (the original banana in pyjamas).

suddenly appreciated that there might be a method behind his trousers.

find it in our hearts to accept what fate has delivered.

Maybe we can even find a way to be glad about it. After all, it definitely

In any case, I think we can rely on Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth to go up to

By which I mean a draw, goalless or otherwise, leading to unhelpful fixture

半半決賽裡出線而已
Extraordinary. Not only are they behind us in the league, for a while there,
Liverpool and Arsenal were even behind us in the Carling. At least attempt to
keep up, won't you?
不可思議的是 他們(立物普/阿森那)不只在聯賽裡落後我們 在某種程度上 他們連在
米老鼠盃都在我們之後 不過起碼他們盡力在追趕了 不是嗎?
