Four goals in the space of 28 minutes during a lively second-half kicked
the Reserves' season off to a flying start at Aldershot.

It was the first home game in charge for Brendan Rodgers who moved from
coaching the youth team in the summer. Jimmy Smith, Phil Younghusband and
Scott Sinclair with a long range effort and a penalty weighed in with the
goals and Rodgers will be delighted if the rest of the season matches the
energetic display against ten men after the break.

There was an early scare for Chelsea when a short back-pass from Michael
Mancienne put Yves Ma Kalambay in trouble. For a brief moment it appeared
Fulham's Wayne Brown had scrambled the ball under the big keeper but Ma
Kalambay recovered to grab it to everyone's relief.

Mancienne was also involved in the game's next significant action, this
time in a positive capacity. Advancing over the halfway line, he found
midfielder Jonas Elmer who thumped a shot from the edge of the area just
over with the Fulham keeper extended.

That was on 19 minutes and there would be a significant wait until the
next attempt on goal. Chelsea were fielding an adventurous 4-3-3 formation
— Shaun Cummings flanked by James Simmonds and Sinclair. The two wingers
would switch sides halfway through the first period but possession in and
around the penalty area was hard to come by.

A couple of half-openings for Cummings evaporated when he sliced wide and
then ran out of space on the run.
Fulham, playing a solitary striker - a rare sight at this level - simply
had no first-half chances in front of goal that weren't of Chelsea's

Two minutes from half-time, a corner from captain Jimmy Smith was glanced
wide of the far post by Mancienne.

Just when that looked likely to be the last action before the break, there
came a booking and three moments of panic in the Fulham defence. First
centre-back Gabriel Zakuani was caught in possession by Smith before
pulling at the escaping Chelsea player's shirt. He was maybe a little
fortunate to see only a yellow card.

Smith took a testing free-kick which was frantically punched clear by
Brooks-Meade. Then loose defending handed two shooting opportunities to
Chelsea, Sinclair blocked before releasing the trigger and Elmer bobbling

Rodgers made the first Chelsea substitution at half-time, 17 year-old
Israeli centre-forward Beh Sahar, a summer arrival from Hapoel Tel-Aviv,
coming on for Simmonds with Cummings pushing wide down the left.

Sahar was involved just nine minutes after the restart. Running on to
Smith's astute pass and showing good strength, he burst beyond Zakuani
before the defender dragged him down just outside the area. Already

ref produced a straight red card.

Just two minutes later Chelsea took the lead. Mancienne looped a ball into
the air towards Smith. As the challenge came in, the skipper succeeded in
lifting the ball over the keeper and under the crossbar. Fulham were left
complaining vociferously about an offside flag that never came.

Suddenly it was all happening. Sahar was put clean through but took too
strong a touch and the keeper cleared. Cummings followed up from 40 yards
but the ball was again blocked, this time flying out to the right. That
was until Sinclair cracked it home with a fantastic diagonal shot.

Last season's youth team top scorer was not too far away from a second
just minutes later, curling the ball past the angle from 25 yards out
after a break involving Sahar and Cummings.
With 15 minutes remaining, another ball forward saw Sahar clear of the
defence once more. Again his control wasn't tight but when the keeper
pounced, the youngster went over and the referee correctly pointed to the
spot. Brooks-Meade guessed the right way but still couldn't reach
Sinclair's low penalty.

Chelsea were enjoying themselves now. Substitute Ricardo Fernandes lofted
the ball over the keeper from 45 yards and skimmed the roof of the net.
Then came the fourth goal - and a very well crafted goal it was too.

Fernandes' excellent pass out right to Sinclair was drilled into the area
where another sub, Phil Younghusband, finished first time at the near
post. It was timed as 81 minutes.

In stoppage time the under-worked Ma Kalambay was finally called into
action, beating out a shot by substitute Concalves. Chelsea had exploited
the extra man well and the second-half shift in gear had seen our local
rivals comprehensively beaten.
