Chelsea Reserves 1 Reading Reserves 2
Monday, Sep 25, 2006
The reserve team suffered the first home defeat by any Chelsea side this
season when a late Phil Younghusband goal was not enough to spark a
comeback against deserved winners.
預備隊在主場吃到第一場敗仗,揚哈斯本遲來的進球無力回天。
In a meeting of two sides with 100 per cent records before tonight, it was
the visitors who created the most chances, finished the stronger and
scored the opening two goals — although Brendan Rodgers team will be
regretting good chances of their own that went begging, and could well
have written a different story.
雖然客隊創造不少機會,但主要還是我們沒把握好自己的良機。
The opening period of the game contained some neat pass and move play by
Chelsea but little incident. A long shot or two at each end - Chelsea's
best effort by left-back Bertrand - were the only attempts on goal in the
first 20 minutes.
前20分鐘很平淡,只有貝爾川一腳夠看。
The first round of applause of the evening was reserved for a very good
save by Yves Ma Kalambay to keep Reading at bay. Then when a long
Pettigrew pass opened up the left for Sinclair and Bertrand to attack for
Chelsea, an initial clearance was picked up by captain Jimmy Smith. A
surging run broke through the last line of defence but he smacked his shot
just past the far post.
Within two minutes Chelsea had fallen behind. It takes a lot to lob 6ft
6in Ma Kalambay but meeting a bouncing long ball 30 yards out, that is
exactly what Reading centre-forward Shane Long did. Twenty-seven minutes
of the game had passed.
The deficit was nearly doubled just past the half-hour when former Burnley
winger Glen Little volleyed a cross from the left just past the post. For
all the tidy approach play at the other end, Chelsea were offering the
visitors hope when they ventured forward.
It took a brave Jack Cork block to keep a thunderous shot from Ulises De
La Cruz from threatening the net again.
Cork was soon spotted at the other end, shooting wide after a Jimmy Smith
shot had been blocked following a swift Chelsea break. In truth, Graham
Stack, the former Arsenal goalkeeper would not have been especially
concerned.
Reading attacked again a minute before the break with a cross-shot wide by
Hayes after working space on the Chelsea right but it was not the final
attempt of the half. That came from Hunt for the visitors, Ma Kalambay
swiftly off his line to block the attempt well.
Chelsea made a couple of early changes after the break — Sam Hutchinson
forced off by injury and the more experienced Phil Younghusband brought on
for Ben Sahar, making just his second start at this level. He had been
quiet since the opening spell.
By the time of the second switch, Reading had already struck again, and it
was another for Shane Long. The Reading striker is not the tallest player
the Chelsea rearguard will ever come up against so there will be questions
asked over how he was able to meet and head in a right wing cross from
just eight yards out.
It took the very ends of Ma Kalamabay's fingertips to keep full-back
Halls' well-struck effort out the net soon after, the volley coming from
the Chelsea's keeper's own stretch and push away.
On 57 minutes the best Chelsea chance of the game so far was missed. Fabio
Ferreira, a nippy Portuguese wideman won his personal duel with the
Reading left-back but when his cross reached an unmarked Younghusband, the
substitute headed wastefully wide.
Ma Kalambay dived full length to deny Long his hat-trick on 65 minutes and
a minute later, another gilt-edged opportunity fell Younghusband's way —
Cork playing the pass of the game to send him through but the shot was too
close to the keeper who saved instinctively.
Reading came back strongly and for the first time this season, the young
Chelsea side looked a little over-run. Perhaps it should not have been a
surprise. With the likes of De La Cruz, Gunnarsson, Little and Oster, the
visitors had brought one of the most experienced sides playing in the
Reserves League on the short 15 mile trip to Aldershot.
Just when the game appeared to be slipping well beyond reach, a dreadful
mistake by centre-back Peter Mate allowed Younghusband a 40-yard dash to
goal unchallenged. At the third time of asking he made no mistake,
slotting the ball low past Stack. There were 14 minutes to go.
As Chelsea raced back to the centre, hopes were high of salvaging the
game. But Reading were unshaken. Quite how Long failed to complete his
hat-trick when he missed a chance just one notch up from a tap-in, he'll
be asking himself all the way back to Berkshire.
Both substitute Henry and striker Hunt could have added a third before the
end with long shots not too far off-target.
