Late goals in each half brought a Chelsea side including John Obi Mikel
victory over a West Ham team which had Javier Mascherano in midfield
against him.

West Ham had Christian Dailly and others with first team experience.
Chelsea's usual reserve side was missing Michael Woods, away with England
Under-17s, and of course on-loan Jimmy Smith and Michael Mancienne.

Manager Brendan Rodgers was delighted with the performance. ‘They were
more experienced than us. It was a close game, two teams playing very
well.’

If anything, West Ham created the better first-half openings, but Chelsea
took the lead five minutes before half-time. ‘It was a terrific pass by
John Obi Mikel,’ said Brendan. ‘He put in Ben Sahar who beat the offside
trap and rounded the goalkeeper to finish perfectly.’

It was the second goal in his last two games for 17-years-old Sahar.
Brendan was delighted. ‘We deserved it for our good play. The attitude of
John Mikel was really pleasing. It's never easy to play in the reserves
when you've been with the first team, especially considering he could
have been in the Nou Camp tonight training with them. His attitude and
class showed all game and I was delighted for him.’

The second-half was as competitive as the first. ‘We started well, but
then withstood pressure from a good West Ham team. Yves Ma Kalambay
produced two excellent stops to keep us ahead. But Scott Sinclair had an

Mascherano was replaced by West Ham with ten minutes to go, but it was two
Chelsea substitutes who combined for the second goal of the game with a

Miroslav Stoch who took one touch and then drilled an excellent finish
into the corner.’

October. He has six youth team goals all scored in his last six games.

team performance and another clean sheet.’
