CHELSEA RESERVES 0 TOTTENHAM RESERVES 0 Tue, 20th Mar 2007 A third consecutive 0-0 draw in a row in a London derby was a low-key appetiser to the big FA Cup clash at White Hart Lane. The first team's replay against the same opposition had led to this reserve team encounter at Aldershot being moved to an unusual afternoon kick-off, and it took some time for this game to hit any sort of stride. The second-half would provide more penalty area action but in difficult weather conditions and on an equally difficult bumpy pitch, the opening 45 minutes were devoid of any clear cut openings for either side. The Chelsea cutting edge was blunted by the absence of Ben Sahar, travelling to join up with the Israel national team ahead of their weekend match against England. Lee Sawyer, recently introduced to this level by coach Brendan Rodgers, was asked to play more forward while Phil Younghusband, the team's senior attack-minded player was back in the side after a spell away on international duty with the Philippines. After an untidy start to the game, there was a hint of an opening for Tottenham after 16 minutes when Phil Ifil's hammered cross more bounced off Andy Barcham than the striker headed it. It flew well over. As Spurs continued to hold the upper hand as a scrappy half continued, Sam Hutchinson was in the right place at the right moment to block an on-target shot from Kieran McKenna. Three minutes before the interval, the Chelsea side at last managed to force their way into the Spurs area. Attacking midfielder Sergio Tejera was the weapon, battling past an Ifil tackle and then skilfully knocking the ball over another opponent - but his shot was ballooned well over. Hopes were for something out of the ordinary to brighten up the game after the restart but no-one expected it to come from above. Five minutes in, the mother of all hailstorms sent down stones the size of marbles. The referee sensibly spared the players pain by calling them off for a minute or so while the precipitation subsided. A game that had started with a light snow flurry then took another twist in weather as thunder was heard overhead and the wind became more blustery. On 53 minutes, Shaun Cummings won a free-kick with a positive run down the middle. Younghusband curled a 25 yard effort wide with the keeper covering. Spurs defender Jake Livermore then needed to clear behind hurriedly as Younghusband played a dangerous ball in. Chelsea were enjoying their best spell of the game. As the hour mark approached, another good Hutchinson block halted an O'Hara shot that threatened to test Chelsea keeper Yves Ma Kalambay. On 69 minutes it took Ma Kalambay to be alert and alive to snuff out significant danger. Sprinting out and using his long reach to tip the ball away from Hallfredsson after Spurs had worked it quickly across the area, it was a quality piece of goalkeeping. In contrast, there was a touch of luck a few minutes later when the same player badly miscued his kick up field. To his immense relief, the ball spun behind but bounced wide of the goal. Danish Under 17 international Morten Nielsen was introduced 12 minutes from the end to make it a second reserve team debut of the afternoon. Carl Magnay, the winner of Football Icon 2, was the other, starting at centre-back. He was steady, if quiet, helped by his place alongside the solid Hutchinson. There as further good work from Ma Kalambay with six minutes to go when he blocked substitute Lee Barnard's point blank range effort and within a minute, Younghusband had the Spurs keeper scrambling across goal with a low shot that flew just wide. After a turgid beginning and middle to this game, it was a fairly lively ending. Barcham could have won it for Spurs as he reached a long punt up the pitch first but completely missed his kick with Ma Kalambay committed. In the final minute of added time there was a harsh booking for Tottenham's Charlie Lee for a foul on Nielsen.
