http://tinyurl.com/5jnxj <-- 官網 Chelsea Reserves 0 Coventry Reserves 0 Monday, Oct 11, 2004 Mick McGiven’s young reserve team produced their most accomplished football at home this season, creating the highest number chances since their 5-1 drubbing of West Ham. Yet for the third game-in-a-row the touch that would have brought a confidence-boosting goal could not be found. It was a shame that an Aldershot night containing some good individual performances could not be capped with a win but there were encouraging signs of improvement and a greater understanding about a team that began with three changes since the last outing. Yves Ma Kalambay took over in goal from Lenny Pidgeley while in midfield, Anthony Grant replaced Nuno Morais who was away with Portugal Under 21s. Looking to solve the attacking impotence of late and without regular Filipe Oliveira (also on Under 21 duty), Danny Woodards was mostly a lone central striker with Michele Gallaccio and Joe Tillen pushing forward quickly on the flanks when Chelsea had possession. It was a tactic that worked well as good crossfield passing found the widemen early and in space. From such play Coventry were forced into the first save of the game after five minutes as Danny Hollands held off Neil Wood. He got a shot away which Scott Shearer had to sprawl full length to stop. Neat work from Joe Tillen and Woodards had opened up the defence for Hollands. Then Chelsea went even closer ten minutes later, Gallaccio cutting in from the right and hitting the post from a tight angle. On the opposite flank the Coventry defence was outstripped by Joe Tillen whose ball across the area found Jimmy Smith, his shot blocked by a defender. It was pretty much one-way traffic and when Chelsea were forced into a piece of hurried defending, it proved to be an excellent one, Steven Watt’s last-ditch tackle in the area thwarting Craig Reid as he was lining up to shoot. Chelsea continued to look good in their approach work, Joe Tillen again given the run of the left-side to set up Woodards who with a lot of the goal to aim at, struck the keeper’s legs. In the ten minutes before the break however, matters turned against Chelsea somewhat. First Woodards was booked for a late tackle and then worse was to come when 16 year-old prospect Michael Mancienne was stretchered off with a damaged ankle after a collision, Adrian Pettigrew was his natural replacement. In injury-time Yves Ma Kalambay had to tip a shot from Eddie Johnson around the post. So the second-half began with the game still scoreless although Chelsea believed they were robbed of a chance to change that just a minute in when a huge appeal for handball in the area was turned down. After a long spell of possession Jimmy Smith tried his luck from distance and was not too far off-target and then midway through the half, Gallaccio floated a ball to the far post where Hollands volleyed into the side-netting. By this stage the side was last season’s youth team give or take two or three players so a good level of understanding was no surprise. Coventry even survived complete pandemonium in their area after Smith had intercepted a poor clearance from the keeper. Woodards battled through a challenge and then cracked the ball across goal where Gallaccio, stretching, just missed applying that elusive final touch. With 15 minutes remaining Ma Kalambay was called into rare action, saving well at the feet of Johnson and then it was all back down the other end once more where some lovely play by Jimmy Smith set-up an unmarked Woodards with a header. Agonisingly, his effort looped wide. Both teams looked to be tiring as the game reached its conclusion and in the dying moments, captain Hollands tried his luck from 50 yards with the keeper off his line. Sadly, the attempt was too high. What a moment of relief that would have been! Instead Chelsea Reserves will have work longer for their reward although on this performance it will surely come soon.
