http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=254936 Crystal Palace Reserves 1 Chelsea Reserves 0 Tuesday, Feb 08, 2005 In a week of winning runs reaching an end, Chelsea’s reserve team has lost for the first time since mid-November. Mick McGiven’s side had won five on the spin prior to the visit to Selhurst Park but in a lively encounter, they failed to find a way back from a goal conceded just before half-time. There was no lack of effort from the young team despite five of the starters having played in the youth team just three days previously. The result of that game was a confidence-knocking 5-0 defeat to table-topping Southampton but there was no shame or lack of belief in this latest reserve performance, just a touch of inexperience and perhaps one or two team changes too many. McGiven had lost his more experienced pros: Filipe Oliveira and Nuno Morais to an Under 21 international, Craig Rocastle transferred out and Sam Tillen and Lenny Pidgeley to injury. In addition, Anthony Grant, Philip Younghusband and Michael Mancienne were all ill while James Simmonds was making his debut for Ireland Under 19s, coming on to score against Norway. The absentees didn’t prevent Chelsea threatening Crystal Palace soon after kick-off, Jimmy Smith turning Danny Hollands’ cross on target but Speroni in the Palace goal saved. Chelsea old-boy Neil Shipperley should have at least hit the target with a similar chance soon after. There was an early booking for Steven Watt, punishment for a late challenge on the lively Wayne Andrews before Andrews was within a fraction of punishing Chelsea in another manner on 25 minutes. Collecting an astutely-taken free-kick, he turned sharply past Ben Hudell and struck a low shot against the far post. Chelsea, trading blow for blow, responded straight away through captain Hollands who won possession and tried his luck from distance, a diving Speroni saving. The game continued to flow from end-to-end and it took a good save from Yves Ma Kalambay (pictured) to keep out a Shipperley header, Palace’s right-back Danny Butterfield not for the first time creating problems with a cross. The chances were shared out but as the half progressed Palace were looking the more cohesive attacking force. It was no big shock when they took the lead just two minutes before the break. The main dangermen , Andrews and Butterfield were again involved, Andrews striking a quick free-kick to his team-mate whose low cross was palmed out by Ma Kalambay. Unfortunately for the big keeper, it rolled to the feet of Lewis Grabban who slammed it home. There was a Chelsea change early in the second-half, 16 year-old Dean Furman given his reserve debut, replacing James Younghusband in midfield. Chelsea stepped up the pressure as the half settled down, forcing Palace back without creating genuine chances. That was until Woodards on the right did well in the 61st minute to burst past Starkey and find Jimmy Smith who was frustrated by a fine Speroni save. Shortly after the Argentine keeper was again in the way of an equaliser as Kneissl, pushed through by Joe Tillen, tried to lift to ball over him. It was a too rare opening for Kneissl, so sharp since his return to the reserves, the lack of service possibly the team’s major failing on the night. There was a scare at other end with 13 minutes remaining when a Hall cross was allowed through the first defensive cordon to Andrews but fortunately his touch lofted the ball over the bar. With three minutes to go, Palace could have sealed it as they worked the bulky Shipperley in just 12 yards out but Ma Kalambay proved a big obstacle and palmed the shot down and away. It was the best, and last piece of goalkeeping of the evening.
