切爾西官網新聞 http://tinyurl.com/536vv West Ham Reserves 1 Chelsea Reserves 5 Wednesday, Sep 22, 2004 Chelsea Reserves have recorded an emphatic first win of the season as the steadying influence of more established players allowed the club’s developing footballers to turn on the style. That is what will have pleased coach Mick McGiven most about the display for although Scott Parker, Glen Johnson and Robert Huth all played their part in the win, it was many of the youngsters who chose this game to produce their best football of the season. Chelsea looked purposeful right from the off and gave early warning of what was to follow when after a move down the left involving the two Tillens, Nuno Morais drove over from distance. The reserves were once more deliberately mirroring the 4-3-3 formation currently favoured by Jose Mourinho at first team level and they looked solid for it against a young West Ham side marshalled at the back by the experienced Andy Melville. He was playing alongside Rio Ferdinand’s younger brother, Anton. On 16 minutes, two of Chelsea’s front three linked up in the box, Joe Tillen supplying Filipe Oliveira on the left who cut inside onto his favoured right-foot and drew the first save of the night from Matthew Reed. Another Tillen combination led to a cross to the far-post where a well-marked Danny Woodards (pictured) headed wide as Chelsea continued to look dangerous. There followed a brief spell of pressure from West Ham but on 28 minutes Chelsea scored a very accomplished opener. Danny Hollands showed good technique to pull a ball out of the air and played it forward to Oliveira. One sidestepped tackle and one pass later, Woodards was one-on-one with the keeper. Maintaining his composure, the Chelsea striker played the ball through Reed’s challenge and finished comfortably. Oliveira was enjoying himself running at the West Ham back-three and approaching the break he found space and chipped not too far over the bar. Chelsea only had to wait two more minutes for the second goal. Sam Tillen drove an excellent cross over from deep on the left and Woodards, who has proved to be no slouch with his head in front of goal before, nodded expertly inside the far post for his second of the night. Chelsea began the second-half brightly too, Glen Johnson drawing a save at the near post to appreciative chants of ‘Judas’ from the sprinkling of West Ham fans behind the goal. The home team could have pulled one back when Greg Pearson won the ball in a challenge with Yves Ma Kalambay as the big keeper attempted to catch but then shot wide of an empty net. On 57 minutes came the third, a blistering strike from Hollands. This time Woodards was involved in the creation, the ball having been half-cleared by the defence after a Johnson cross. Two minutes later however, West Ham made the scoresheet following a mistake by Huth. Attempting to play the ball into midfield, he misplaced his pass to Mark Noble who from 35 yards chipped the stranded Ma Kalambay. Huth was determined to make amends so it was a little ill-advised to say the least of West Ham to concede a free-kick just a couple of minutes further on. From 35 yards Huth drilled the ball low, the keeper spilled it and Oliveira following up capitalised for number four. The fifth came right on full-time and it was text book counter-attacking. Nearly half the team were involved in a sweeping move down the left which ended with Oliveira in the centre cracking Ben Hudell’s low cross past the weary Reed. Parker and Huth played the full 90 minutes, Johnson was replaced just five minutes before time. Considering the reserves had mustered just one goal in the previous four games, the step-up in performance is clear. Club captain John Terry, an interested spectator back on his childhood manor, must have been impressed. As he will no doubt testify, it is always nice to hammer the Hammers.
