Leicester Reserves 1 Chelsea Reserves 1
Monday, Oct 25, 2004
A sickener of an equaliser from a retaken penalty in the dying moments
prevented Chelsea’s young legs overcoming Leicester’s experienced heads for
what would have been a deserved win.
Lenny Pidgeley (pictured) in the Chelsea goal had already been one of the
heroes of the night as Mick McGiven’s team battled to hold onto a lead given
by Danny Hollands’ first-half goal. That job looked to be complete when the
keeper saved a penalty just before the final whistle with an excellent dive to
his left.
But to his horror the linesman ruled he had left his line too early and there
was to be a retake. It was shades of Carlo Cudicini at Anfield last season as
any forward movement was minimal but with no recourse to appeal, Pidgeley faced
the taker Trevor Benjamin again.
The Leicester player went the same way, the Chelsea keeper didn’t so the
result became a frustrating draw rather than a deserved and confidence boosting
win.
Chelsea arrived at Kettering Town FC to find Leicester, without a midweek
Carling Cup match, fielding several players with plenty of first team miles on
the clock in the shape of Benjamin, former Chelsea trainee Nathan Blake,
Icelandic international Joey Gudjonsson and Tommy Wright.
However despite a lack of victories this season, it is an increasingly settled
Chelsea second string and one capable of more than matching Leicester
throughout this game.
Two bookings in quick succession were the most notable occurrences in a quiet
opening period - Pidgeley cautioned on an escapade outside his area when he
brought down Blake and then Anthony Grant seeing yellow after fouling Benjamin.
Then on 24 minutes, Pidgeley acquitted himself rather better with his hands
than he had just beforehand with his feet, tipping over Blake’s rocket of a
header with a brilliant save.
On 35 minutes, Chelsea produced the opening goal with little advance warning.
Woodards was tight on the right wing but with a surge of pace, he managed to
whip a cross in behind the full-back.
It was a good ball but there was a big helping hand when Logan in the Leicester
goal completely misjudged the flight and midfielder Danny Hollands headed in
from almost underneath the crossbar.
Joe Tillen really should have doubled the lead after a loose Leicester chest
back by Wesolowski flew his way but with no time to think, he headed wide.
Pidgeley was the first keeper in action after the break, reacting well again to
beat out a shot from Wright after Gudjonsson had split the Chelsea defence.
Wright spurned another good chance just a few minutes later, shooting wide from
close in with the Chelsea defence all over the place.
During this period, Leicester were racking up the bookings as well as the
chances, after indiscipline from the old heads of Blake and Gudjonsson. Sam
Tillen was also cautioned as the ref gave his notebook a bit of a hammering.
This was the first time in five games Chelsea had held a lead and although the
team had not played as well second-half as first, Leicester were rarely looking
dangerous apart from a Benjamin attempt at a spectacular. Chelsea were growing
stronger.
With just over 15 minutes to go, Hollands almost doubled his tally with a shot
from outside the area that only just cleared the bar and there was almost an
action replay of the goal when with Logan flapping once more, the cross was
just too high for Hollands.
But then three minutes from the end came the heartbreak moment. Steven Watt
dived in and felled substitute Lee Morris for a clear penalty and the final
drama began.
Chelsea:
Lenny Pidgeley; Dean Smith, Nuno Morais, Steven Watt, Sam Tillen (Ben Hudell);
Jimmy Smith, Anthony Grant (Philip Younghusband), Danny Hollands;
Filipe Oliveira, Danny Woodards, Joe Tillen.
Leicester:
Logan, Wesolowski, Wykes, Norvall, Stearman, Dawson (Porter), Butcher (Morris),
Gudjonsson, Wright, Blake, Benjamin.
