Chelsea Reserves 0 Crystal Palace Reserves 2
Monday, Sep 27, 2004
Goals at the very start and the very end of the second-half banished memories
of a bright Chelsea beginning to the game as the reserves were left still
looking for their first three points at home this season.
It was match that proved to be a good example of the effect of confidence on
performance in young footballers. Fresh from last week’s 5-1 drubbing of West
Ham, Chelsea started with a real purpose and belief not seen in the opening
weeks of the season. Once a justly awarded penalty had been converted by the
opposition however, it was a quite different team in action.
The opening 25 minutes were bright with with midfielders Danny Hollands, Nuno
Morais and Jimmy Smith all influencing the game. Filipe Oliveira and Danny
Woodards in attack again looked the partnership that had found the net four
times over in east London.
In the opening minute Woodards almost picked up where he had left off against
West Ham. Pressuring Palace keeper Lance Cronin who had come out his area to
sweep up, the Chelsea striker won the ball and athletically hooked towards the
target, the ball landing on the roof of the net.
Then on 20 minutes, the keeper almost cost Palace once again - caught by Smith
with the ball at his feet inside the area this time. Woodards collected a pass
and shot over but had already been flagged offside.
At this stage it was a fast-flowing game that held the attention with ease, the
visitors also playing their part.
Palace’s best chance of the first-half came on 25 minutes when the dangerous
looking Ivan Kaviedes (who played in the first team game between these clubs
back in August) turned Adrian Pettigrew but his low shot was tipped round the
post by the stretching Lenny Pidgeley.
Chelsea’s initial flourish began to wane a little but the contest remained
keenly contested right up to the break.
Just two minutes into the second-half however, the home side were put firmly on
the back-foot when Pettigrew rather crudely brought down Hungarian
international Sandor Torgehelle in the area. Kaviedes gave Pidgeley no chance
from the penalty spot.
Palace then moved into the ascendancy with Pidgeley saving well from Gonzalo
Sorondo after a corner and then watching with relief a few seconds later as a
shot looped narrowly over.
With Chelsea failing to perform with the panache of the first-half, Mick
McGiven decided to make changes. Dean Smith and James Simmonds entered with
Pettigrew and Joe Tillen making way. Nuno Morais dropped into central defence
for the first time since joining Chelsea and immediately looked comfortable.
His team-mates attempted to rally themselves with Hollands striking a well-hit
effort that looked to have a chance before it was blocked and Woodards almost
bundling through the middle but the Palace defence had enough bodies back.
At the very moment the board went up to indicate two minutes stoppage time,
Kaviedes was latching onto a long-ball in behind the Chelsea defence and he
finished with some style from the edge of the area.
In the end the experience and touch of class in the Palace attack paid
dividends. Incidentally, Ecuadorian international Kaviedes had been at Porto
during the opening weeks of Jose Mourinho’s reign there.
Chelsea’s main creative force throughout the game, the Crystal Palace keeper,
still found time to present one more chance before the end by slicing a
clearance. But he made it back to his line just in time to catch Hollands’
final attempt.
Chelsea:
Lenny Pidgeley; Michael Mancienne, Adrian Pettigrew (Dean Smith), Steven Watt,

Filipe Oliveira, Danny Woodards, Joe Tillen (James Simmonds).
