Chelsea Reserves 1 Watford Reserves 0
Monday, Nov 29, 2004
It is smiles all round for Chelsea’s reserve team as a Philip Younghusband’s
goal has given his side a first home win of the season.
The 17 year-old striker in his second start at this level found the goal touch
lacking for much of the season to finally bring reward for the efforts Mick
McGiven’s players have put in over the weeks.
It was a familiar looking young line-up apart from another 17 year-old, Ed
Brand, making his first start for the reserves at right-back. Filipe Oliveira
and Nuno Morais both returned after missing the previous game through
international duty while Lenny Pidgeley took over in goal from Yves Ma Kalambay
to face his loan club of last season.
Unlike many games this campaign, Watford came to Aldershot without players of
significant experience, making this a more even battle than most.
Oliveira was first to work the Watford keeper on ten minutes with a free-kick
just outside the area. Well-struck, Reece Kirk saved the attempt but couldn’t
hold the ball, a defender hacking it to safety. Soon after Steven Watt was
presented with a heading opportunity at the far post but directed his effort
wide.
For much of the rest of the first-half Chelsea were put in no danger by Watford
but were finding it difficult to penetrate at the other end.
There was one scary moment when Lenny Pidgeley dropped a cross and hopes were
raised briefly when a good diagonal ball from Oliveira gave Joe Tillen a
crossing chance, Watford limiting the damage to a corner.
Approaching half-time, Watford midfielder Andy Ferrell tested Pidgeley from
distance but the Chelsea keeper was well up to the challenge. Then with five
minutes to go before the break, Chelsea scored.
The move started with a Brand cross high into the box which Oliveira headed
down. Younghusband was free and onside at the far-post and although he only
half-struck his shot, contact was sufficient for the ball to go in.
There was plenty of cause for celebration. Not only was it Younghusband’s
first at reserve level, it broke a team scoring drought at home that was into
its fifth game.
Younghusband had a chance to double his tally nine minutes into the second-half
when he took advantage of some indecision in the Watford central defence to
burst through. Taking aim he blasted high and wide.
It was his last action, Danny Woodards replacing the young striker soon after.
At the same time Ed Brand’s full debut came to an end. He had picked up an
injury just after the break and after limping for several minutes was replaced
by Dean Smith.
Chelsea failed to add to the advantage as the second-half progressed and it took
a couple of pieces of dominant Watt defending to keep Watford at arm’s length.
But his team were highly unlucky not to put the game beyond doubt with five
minutes to go when Watford keeper Kirk punched Joe Tillen’s corner into his
own net under no direct challenge from a Chelsea player. The referee initially
gave the goal but withdrew the award under the instruction of a linesman’s
flag. It was a poor decision between the two.
Chelsea nearly paid heavily when Ferrell hooked McNamee’s cross just outside
Pidgeley’s post while at the other end Kirk beat out a Joe Tillen shot on the
run.
The game opened out considerably in the dying minutes and it took another save
to keep out a similar Tillen effort, the young Chelsea wide man disappointed
not to have found a way past with at least one shot.
The insurance of that elusive extra goal proved unnecessary, the final whistle
following seconds later.
