Portsmouth Reserves 0 Chelsea Reserves 1
Wednesday, Dec 08, 2004
Chelsea Reserves finished the last game of the calendar year with the
team’s first back-to-back wins of the season.
A brave and wonderful goal by substitute Danny Woodards 16 minutes from
time divided the sides, but Chelsea’s control and accomplished performances
from everyone throughout made it an impressive end to 2004.
Woodards was somewhat aggrieved to be only on the bench, but after
suffering a medial ligament injury in his knee at the beginning of November
he had seen young Phil Younghusband come into the side and impress, and
score the only goal of the last victory at home to Watford.
It was 4-3-3 as normal from the off, without two of the more experienced
players. Goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley and central defender Nuno Morais were
going to play, but after a late return from Porto in the early hours of the
morning they were allowed to rest and Yves Makabu-Ma Kalambay and Adrian
Pettigrew were drafted in. Both were to play important roles in the win.
Early on Ma Kalambay showed good hands on crosses and a shot from
distance. Not for the first time Anthony Grant – or ‘Judge’ as the
players call him – was making his presence felt in central midfield,
winning challenges and passing simple balls. Scottish international Richard
Hughes was booked for a second bad challenge on him.
Joe Tillen and Danny Hollands were behind a good move up the left which
finished with Filipe Oliveira, who had started it, shooting through a crowd
and getting a deflection which goalkeeper Harald Wapenaar did well to kick
away.
Although Tillen hit a series of disappointing set plays, he then burst
past right-back Angus and hit a fantastic cross which marauding right-back
Ed Brand just failed to reach.
At the team’s best Oliveira was passing with panache and beating
defenders for fun, Phil Younghusband linked up well and Hollands and Grant
kept the game moving. Portsmouth’s ability to give the ball away helped.
But by half-time the score was still 0-0 and Grant had picked up a
careless booking for a frustrated challenge on Cameroonian international
Valery.
At half-time in a planned double substitution, Woodards and Filipe
Morais, who has not played for the reserves since requiring knee surgery
following an injury in the first game of the season at Watford, came on for
Tillen and Grant, both of whom will be required in the FA Youth Cup next
week.
McGiven changed the team’s shape to a midfield diamond with Smith at
the back, Oliveira on the right, Hollands on the left and Morais at the
front. Woodards and Younghusband were the strikers.
In just three-and-a-half minutes Woodards had hit the post, chasing a
wide ball and placing a shot which wrong-footed Wapenaar and dribbled
against the far stick with the keeper chasing.
Morais was charging about like a hurricane, and had two venomous long
distance shots. But it wasn’t all Chelsea. Liam Horsted, playing off the
left flank for Portsmouth, was running at Brand and cutting in, and one
vicious cross had to be cleared bySteven Watt for a corner. Watt was
outstanding throughout.
But he couldn’t stop centre-forward Keene getting time and space in
the area before missing the target with only Ma Kalambay to beat.
Portsmouth nearly took the lead from a near post corner, the close
range header thumping into Ma Kalambay who responded by holding it well.
Chelsea rode the Portsmouth challenge and scored a great goal.
Pettigrew brought the ball out from the back and delivered an excellent
cross-field ball to Sam Tillen who had made good ground on several
occasions without providing a final ball or shot. Everyone’s final ball
had been the ‘let down’ factor of the night. But not this time. He
whipped in a cross and Woodards thrust himself ahead of defenders to knock
it in as the challenges came flying out. He was injured but it was worth
it. It was his third goal of the season.
Horsted continued to be a problem and brought a flying save from Ma
Kalambay, but one counter attack in which Smith failed to find the Chelsea
runners when only one defender was back could have sealed the win.
Before the end Portsmouth left-back Cooper was booked for clattering
Oliveira. They weren’t a good side, but they had some experienced players
to help their youngsters, and Chelsea produced the most accomplished
performance, if not the most eye-catching, of the season so far.
