http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=238326 Southampton Reserves 2 Chelsea Reserves 0 Tuesday, Nov 16, 2004 Chelsea’s second string have fallen to a third consecutive defeat but after a disastrous, confidence-sapping opening to the game, young players showed backbone to take the second-half fight to an experienced Southampton side. Even by the standards of recent Chelsea reserve sides it was a particularly fresh-faced team that took to the pitch at St Mary’s, especially in attack where two 17 year-olds and an 18 year-old were selected. With Filipe Oliveira and Nuno Morais away on Under 21 international duty and Lenny Pidgeley recovering from illness, striker Philip Younghusband made his first start at this level and there were recalls for goalkeeper Yves Ma Kalambay and centre-back Adrian Pettigrew. First-year scholar James Simmonds came in for Jimmy Smith and nine of the side are eligible to play for Chelsea’s youth team. An experienced Southampton side contained Matthew Oakley, David Prutton, Yoann Folly, Leandre Griffit, Peter Crouch and Leon Best, all of whom have seen first team action. Given the age balance of the game, a bad start was the last thing Chelsea needed and starts don’t get much worse than this one! Chelsea kicked-off but immediately lost possession. Beanpole centre-forward Crouch is not the type of player to leave unmarked when a cross comes in but that was his luxury with only 18 seconds on the clock leaving him to head in Griffit’s ball with Ma Kalambay motionless. The second goal came just seven minutes later! A Ma Kalambay long throw-out failed to find a blue shirt and when the ball came back in, Leon Best headed on and Crouch hooked over the equally giant keeper whose hand on the ball was not enough to divert it from the target. At this stage there were justifiable fears for Mick McGiven’s youngsters but they managed to stem the tide as the half progressed, enjoying spells of possession and having the next chance. On 27 minutes Southampton dealt badly with a Joe Tillen corner and after spot of pinball around the area, Tillen was given an opportunity to shoot, forcing keeper Michael Poke to toe-poke away from just inside his post. It was Joe Tillen who enjoyed Chelsea’s second shot of the half with a 30 yard free-kick that had Poke stretching as it cleared the bar by a yard. Crouch was denied a first-half hat-trick in the last minute before the break when after turning inside Anthony Grant he attempted to lift the ball over Ma Kalambay. This time the Belgian keeper had enough inches to catch. After a couple of minutes of the second-half there was an early Chelsea switch with Smith replacing Simmonds who had taken a knock just before the interval. A first-time shot from Smith drew the first save of the half, followed by Joe Tillen blazing an effort past the near-post. Chelsea were becoming the brighter side. There was another Chelsea change just past the hour, Ed Brand taking over at right-back from Dean Smith for his first reserve action of the season. Soon after James Younghusband came on for Michele Gallaccio giving Chelsea the rare sight of two sets of brothers on the pitch. An excellent Joe Tillen curling cross found Phil Younghusband unmarked on 68 minutes but his header was straight at Poke and a shot from same player four minutes later went high and wide from a tight angle. An injury soon after left him a passenger for the remainder of the game with all subs used. The half-chances kept coming, Danny Hollands diverting wide at the far-post after a Joe Tillen free-kick was headed across goal by Pettigrew. Tillen’s next involvement was a booking for dissent, joining Grant and Steven Watt in the referee’s notebook. In injury time Ma Kalambay dropped down low to tip a shot from Andrew Surman wide. A goal for Southampton then would have been an unfair reflection on the second-half. As has been the case for much of the season, Chelsea failed to find the cutting edge needed to recover from going behind but credit is due for the character and composure shown in mounting an against-all-odds attempted fight-back.
