Chelsea’s opening reserve fixture of the season ended in defeat at Vicarage
Road, a second-half goal the decider in a game of few chances at either end.
In a week of internationals at senior and Under 21 levels, it was a young
pool of players available to coach Mick McGiven as he wrote out his first team
sheet of the campaign, Craig Rocastle who was celebrating his 23rd birthday the
oldest on the pitch. In contrast, Watford fielded eight players with first team
experience.
The closet Rocastle, or any of the other Chelsea players, came to celebrating
during the game came midway through the first-half when the ball struck the
Watford bar.
Filipe Morais had been fouled for a free-kick out on the left which he curled
over himself. Michele Gallaccio rose well to head on target but even at a
tender 40 years of age, Alec Chamberlain in the Watford goal was able to
stretch and tip onto the bar.
Prior to that there had been one dangerous attack from either side, the first
falling early to Gallaccio after a ball from the back by Dean Smith had beaten
the offside but the shot was tame.
For Watford, a good low cross by Ashley Young looked likely to cause problems
but in the end was just too far in front of his forwards.
Morais failed to recover from the foul that led to the attempt onto the bar and
had to be withdrawn on the half-hour. That meant only a second reserve outing
for 16 year-old James Simmonds at the front of a midfield diamond - the closer
link between reserve and first-team football this season evident in the similar
systems employed.
The majority of Watford pressure in the first-half came down the right but
left-back Ben Hudell, a late replacement for Sam Tillen in the starting eleven,
was timing his tackles well.
Five minutes from the break Watford did manage an attempt on goal, working a
corner that allowed Ferrell to cut in and shoot but the effort cleared the bar
Just before the break Hollands brought the ball out from his half and pushed it
through to Simmonds but under pressure from the defence his shot was without
direction or power.
Chelsea started the second-half brightly but failed to turn that into chances
although midway through, Steven Watt wasn’t a million miles off-target with a
header from a deep Hudell free-kick. Watford then raced straight up the other
end and scored.
An angled ball was sent over from the right by Scott Fitzgerald, Young turned
it on target and Lenny Pidgeley could only parry into the path of Hameur
Bouazza who had a simple tap-in.
For the remainder of the game Pidgeley, back at the ground where he performed
on loan for a chunk of last season, was the busiest man on the pitch.
There was another hairy moment when a cross came through a crowd and he had to
react late, this time his block dropping safely and then he stopped a fierce
drive on the run from Fitzgerald.
Ten minute from time in a game Chelsea rarely looked like saving, our keeper
pulled of his best save of the night to a low shot from goalscorer Bouazza.

Lenny Pidgeley; Dean Smith (Philip Younghusband), Adrian Pettigrew, Steven Watt,

(James Simmonds); Michele Gallaccio, Danny Woodards.
