http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?id=224363 Derby Reserves 0 Chelsea Reserves 0 Tuesday, Sep 07, 2004 A lack of potency in attack was once more in evidence from the reserves at Pride Park but coach Mick McGiven will take encouragement from some characterful defending by young players against experienced opponents. The home side were reduced to ten men in an otherwise calm encounter but that disadvantage did not arrive until the final 20 minutes. Prior to that Chelsea had needed to dig deep as Derby pressed forward after a relatively even first- half. And in fact it was Chelsea’s visiting youngsters who went closest to breaking the deadlock with captain Danny Hollands skimming the outside of a post midway through the second-half. After last week’s inclusion of first team squad players it was back to the junior ranks this time with Nuno Morais the oldest player at 20. It was his first game in central midfield as the team lined-up 4-3-3 in front of Yves Ma Kalambay, in goal instead of Lenny Pidgeley who was away with England Under 21s. There was an early scare for the young keeper when he failed to collect a through ball cleanly, allowing David Cassidy a shot on goal which Steven Watt headed clear. But soon Chelsea were retaliating, Joe Tillen latching onto Hollands fine ball and forcing keeper Lee Grant to save with his legs. For Derby, Labarthe Tome played a one-two with Junior and it took some excellent defending by Sam Tillen to first track the danger and then slide and tackle inside the area in one of the highlights of Chelsea’s early play. As the game approached 20 minutes gone, the home side were increasingly pushing forward. However Sam Tillen decided to exert an influence by going forward this time, bursting down the left and into the area before shooting across goal. A speculative lob on the run by brother Joe forced Grant to back-peddle and claw away while at the other end, Junior was not too far wide with a powerful drive as the two sides exchanged blows. Derby’s South American front runners Junior and Labarthe Tome, aided by Cassidy were looking capable of combining and finding a way through on more than one occasion so needed little extra help from Chelsea. But they got some five minutes from the break when Ma Kalambay kicked poorly and Morais slipped when attempting to remedy the error. Labarthe Tome fortunately shot inches wide. So the sides went into the break level, Chelsea emerging from it with one change – Michael Mancienne after three junior England games in a week making way at right-back for Dean Smith. Derby were the first to break through in the second-half and in fact put the ball in the net via the head of central defender Konjic. An offside flag denied the goal. Junior then cracked an angled drive just wide as the home side turned up the pressure. It looked as if Chelsea might crack with the midfield becoming a little overrun but marshalled by centre-backs Watt and Pettigrew, the rearguard held firm and at the other end came Hollands’ strike against the woodwork from 25 yards out. Then with 20 minutes to go it all got a little messy. Joe Tillen slid in to win the ball from Nathan Doyle and as the Derby right-back landed, he stamped on Tillen’s groin. The recipient was enraged and a mass confrontation followed. When a few inches had at last been restored between the players, the red card was shown to Doyle with a yellow for Tillen, punishment for a retaliatory push. We were then treated to the comedy of the Derby fans booing Sam as well as Joe for the rest of the game! Joe twice had the chance to cause danger in the closing minutes but chose the wrong options, the crowd reaction perhaps clouding the 17 year-old’s judgement. But then such experience is what football at this level for young players is all about. The less important result makes it one defeat and one draw on the reserves’ travels this season with a one game drawn at home.
