Chelsea Reserves 0 Arsenal Reserves 2
Monday, Nov 08, 2004
An impressive 5,468 crowd, a record in the four seasons Chelsea has
been playing reserve fixtures at Aldershot, turned out to watch the second
string against Arsenal but a goal conceded in each half meant no joy in
the battle of the London youngsters.
It was very much the junior ranks of both clubs' full-time players in
action with one eye turned towards Carling Cup action later in the week.
Arsenal keeper Stuart Taylor was a late withdrawal giving the game an even
less experienced look than billed.
It therefore must have been a big boost to those involved to play in
front of such a bumper crowd but it was an uneventful start to the game.
Joe Tillen was the first to raise anticipation, embarking on a mazy
run into the Arsenal box. Cutting back onto his favoured left-foot, he let
fly but was high of the target. It was the last genuine Chelsea attempt
for some time.
Arsenal opened the scoring midway through the first-half. The visitors
broke away down the right and when the cross came in low, it evaded the
entire Chelsea defence. Stephen O’Donnell shot and initially Lenny
Pidgeley pulled off a very good stop but the ball lofted up and O’Donnell
was first there again to head into an unguarded net.
Danny Hollands was the first player booked for bringing down the lanky
Nicklas Bendtner but when Arsenal threatened again five minutes before the
break, this time they didn’t pass Pidgeley. The big Chelsea keeper dived
full length to turn round a shot from Anthony Stokes after a penetrating
run.
The second-half couldn’t have started much worse for Chelsea. Within
seconds of the whistle, Stokes set off on another enterprising burst and
was brought down in the box by Ben Hudell. The upended player took the
penalty himself, sending Pidgeley the wrong way.
Mick McGiven didn’t hang about in making a double change, James
Simmonds a straight swap for Jimmy Smith and Phil Younghusband replacing
Hudell with Joe Tillen dropping back into the now vacant left-back
position.
Arsenal constantly looked capable of adding to their lead, a couple of
outstretched Chelsea legs the difference between crosses finding their
target or not.
Fifteen minutes from time Chelsea at last launched another attack. A
long ball from Nuno Morais found Younghusband clear and onside. From an
angle, he forced keeper Chris Wright into a near-post block but the ball
looked to be rebounding favourably until Oliveira and Simmonds carelessly
got in each other’s way. With the goal gapping, a golden opportunity
passed. To add to Oliveira's woe he was booked soon after for dissent.
Younghusband forced Wright to save with his legs a few minutes later
as Chelsea showed some spirit in the closing stages. A Tillen cross rifled
across the area was another moment of hope but no player in the middle had
the legs to reach it.
The last word in the game went to Arsenal’s Stokes who had been a
handful for the Chelsea defence all night. Pidgeley saved his penultimate
effort and then a combination of the Chelsea keeper and Steven Watt
flinging themselves at his final shot deflected it wide.
With no gap in age or experience stacked against Chelsea for once, the
evening had seen a disappointing display.
