The game at Aldershot was a rearrangement of a postponed encounter from a month ago and concluded the Barclays Premiership Reserve League South campaign for Mick McGiven’s team. Filipe Morais gave Chelsea an early lead and it looked to be one they were going to hold onto comfortably until the late, disputed decision to award the visitors from the south coast a spot-kick. The proximity of the match to the first team’s Champions League battle in the evening deprived the reserves of more senior players who have turned out of late such as Mikael Forssell and Nuno Morais. They were also without the injured Sam Tillen and Sebastian Kneissl. In the absence of others, Filipe Morais took it upon himself to assume the role of goal grabber. With ten minutes gone he latched up on a long ball forward from his keeper, out-paced one defender, turned inside another and finished with style, high into the net. It was the first goal at this level for the pacy Morais who has been unlucky with injuries the past couple of years. A powerful drive by Oliveira soon after kept Poke in the Southampton goal active but when his opposite number between the Chelsea posts, Yves Ma Kalambay, was first called into action he was lucky not to give away a penalty. He appeared to catch the ankles of David McGoldrick as the Southampton striker attempted to round him. Some fancy footwork from Morais and then Filipe Oliveira almost carved out a chance on the half-hour but when that broke down, Ben Hudell outside the area tried his luck, the ball curling just wide. Chelsea were forced into a change just past the restart. Oliveira had suffered an injury in a challenge and was replaced by Joe Tillen. Right-back Dean Smith continued his run after starting a counter-attack midway through the half. He was there at the far-post to receive Morais’ deep cross but his downward header was cleared by a well-positioned defender. Hudell had earlier fired a direct free-kick a couple of yards wide and when he was given a second attempt 15 minutes from time, he readjusted his aim and drew a good save from Poke, low down at his post. Chelsea had played some bright football in the first half, the second period was a more staid affair but Southampton had rarely looked like scoring. That was until at the very end of normal time. Anthony Grant conceded possession to Nathan Dyer who beat Dean Smith and fell as Grant chased him. The referee’s decision to award a penalty looked a harsh one. The giant frame of Ma Kalambay is a huge obstacle for any penalty taker to beat but although the Chelsea keeper got a firm hand on Nathan Gillet’s spot-kick, he could not keep it out.
