Bookies face Chelsea 'Armageddon'

Bookmakers face "Armageddon" if Chelsea win all four trophies this season.

Frank Lampard's late winner against Fulham last night put them in the
semi-finals of the Carling Cup while the Blues are still top of the Barclays
Premiership and unbeaten in the Champions League.

Winger Arjen Robben revealed earlier his week that his team-mates were putting
every effort into achieving an historic quadruple - and bookmakers Ladbrokes
quote them as 33/1 to pull it off.

As a good value bet, bookies could give punters a massive pay-out if Jose
Mourinho's side manage to lift all four trophies.

Bookies face a pay-out disaster - on the scale of when Frankie Dettori rode
every winner on a seven-race card at Ascot in 1996 - if Chelsea achieve their
target.

Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush said: "It would be historic, and at 33/1 it's
a big ask. But from our point of view it would be Armageddon if they manage
to do it.

"It would be awful for us, terrible if they maintain their form."

But Holland international Robben, who has made an instant impact since
returning from injury. is not concerned about odds or big pay-outs.

"It will be very hard to win all four - but we'll try," he said.

"You can't go into a competition with any other attitude. There's no point
taking part if you don't want to win it."

Mourinho backed up this winning attitude by fielding a strong side against
west London neighbours Fulham.

With Manchester United and Arsenal fielding inexperienced side's in the Carling
Cup, Chelsea have favourites for the trophy all season and are now at short
odds of 5/4.

A win at the Millennium Stadium in February next year could be the start of
the quadruple for the Stamford Bridge side - and bookies believe Mourinho's
squad could be the key to winning.

"With the quadruple, so much will depend on the Carling Cup," Lush added.
"It's what team they choose to play but they have experienced internationals
to call upon rather than youngsters."

Repeating last season's European success he had with Porto is perhaps
Mourinho's biggest challenge. The form of Ronaldinho at Barcelona, and Andrei
Shevchenko at AC Milan have been the highlights of the tournament so far.

Mourinho's side are currently 6/1 to win Europe's premier competition and
have only conceded one goal in their five games.

Lush added: "The Champions League is the one we think is the hardest to
forecast. Barcelona and AC Milan are very good teams they have to overcome."

After Arsenal's slump, Chelsea are now 4/7 to win their first title since
1955 with punters backing them after initial circumspection when Mourinho
took over.

"Gambling on Chelsea has been sustained since Roman Abramovich came to the
club and they started buying players," Lush added.

"But people held off when Mourinho was appointed as manager, they didn't
exactly jump on the bandwagon."
