Jose stays optimistic in defeat

    Despite experiencing his first defeat as Chelsea manager, and despite
losing a half-time lead, Jose Mourinho left the United States full of
optimism on Monday night.


    “In the same way after against Celtic or Roma I was saying that it was
a friendly, that it was a good training session, I do the same,” he told
the assembled media.


    “Maybe a better one against Milan. Because Milan is a stronger team
and they play a serious match with a serious attitude.


    “In fact before the game starts they ask me permission to make eight
changes because we are only allowed seven, they ask my co-operation, and
they play the same team until the last minutes. That’s a good image as to
their attitude.


    “For us it was a great training session. If you analyse the game as a
game I think the result is not fair, I think most of the time we were the
better team, we had the control of the play, and in fact when they scored
the second goal, the match was completely under control. A corner, you
cannot concede a goal like this at a corner, and after that the game was
again finished. It’s our mistakes that we have to solve.”


    He said that he has watched videos of Chelsea games last season and is
aware that we conceded far too many goals at set-pieces, and this is
something that needs working on. Expect much practice in training over the
next few weeks.


    “But I’m really happy with the game and I’m happy with the tour,
I’m happy with the attitude of the players, the way they work everyday,
the way they play, the evolution I can see in the team, and the results are
not the most important thing.


    “If the result was the most important thing I would play other players
that I left out for prevention or precaution. I could play Smertin, or even
Robben, so we didn’t think about the result.”


    The significant change of emphasis in Chelsea’s style is something
that will take time to evolve, he believes.


    “I’m a new manager, I have a lot of new players, we have a different
style of play, and we are working together three days – because three days
ago the last player arrive – so we need more time to become, I don’t say
a perfect team because there are no perfect teams, but to be a good team.


    “But we have still 15 days. But again the match on the weekend I think
is only important because it’s a big day for Zola and he deserves a big
day, and it’s a big day for Chelsea fans because it’s the first time
we’re together with them, but in terms of results it’s not the most
important thing.


    “So we have 15, 16 days to prepare for Manchester United which is an
important match, but it’s only three points, no more than that, just three
points. It’s one of dozens of matches we have to play during our season.
It’s just the first.”


    He is delighted with the form of his strikers.


    “It’s a good feeling and it’s good for confidence that in the tour
our three strikers all score, Eidur two goals, Didier two goals and Kezman
three goals. I think it’s very important for their confidence, especially
Didier and Mateja because they are new players arriving and therefore their
confidence is fantastic, and I think everybody saw Didier has a lot of
potential, but after the minutes 70 he was through.


    “I had no more strikers to play, I had Johnson and Huth, nobody more.
Mutu wasn’t fit, Robben wasn’t. The best thing was to play him at 65
minutes, 70, at highest intensity and change him.


    “But I think it’s great because we have good strikers, they are
scoring goals, we are playing good football. They have a lot of confidence,
and when I look at the future – I say to the players before I came here –
when we look to the past and see the way the team is now, and the way the
relationship grew up and the atmosphere between us, and the quality of our
play and our spirit, then we have to wait for good things because for sure
good things will happen.”


    His clear methodology on keeping possession and when losing it pressing
to regain it early leads to clear beliefs also on how to use it.


    “I think we kept the ball great. What I think is that when you are
winning and you keep possession of the ball you need the players to break
that routine.


    “So you have control of the play, you have the ball, your opponent is
running after the ball and they don’t get it, but once in a game you have
to try to break that routine, to break that slow pace. I was commenting to
my assistants on my side, if I have Kezman ready to play I put him in the
game, he’ll break the game. Or Robben fit, because Robben is not fit. Or
Duff ready, because Duff is not ready – I just gave him 20 minutes against
Roma and 45 now because I want to push him, but he’s not ready.


    “If we played Man United tomorrow he’s not in a condition to play, so
he just can play friendly matches.


    “So if we have the fast players to put in that moment, we could see
Nesta was really tired, Cafu too, Kaladze was at that moment slow, and with
fast players we could kill the game.”


    The team headed off for the airport straight from the stadium and flew
overnight back to England. Wednesday is a day off and then it’s double
training on Thursday and Friday.
