Mourinho awaits first Chelsea-Spurs 'classic'

No games in Chelsea’s coming season are laden with more recent history than
the London derbies against Tottenham. As he looks forward to his first
experience of the big fixture, Jose Mourinho has explained that while the
importance of a derby encounter is certainly not wasted on him, he has little
time for past records.

Chelsea of course go into Sunday’s game protecting our proud 28 game unbeaten
League run over the men from London N19. It is more than 14 years since Spurs
last won at Stamford Bridge.

“I have heard of the record but it means absolutely nothing to me,” was
Mourinho’s response to the statistics. “I also heard before we went to Paris
that Chelsea had never had a victory in France. But we went there and ended
this dark history.

However while Chelsea’s domination over our big rivals in recent times
impresses the Chelsea manager little, what a win in this fixture means to the
supporters is clear to him.

“All my life I have played classics,” Mourinho pointed out. “When I was an
assistant manager I had beautiful games like Barcelona v Real Madrid. Later as
a head coach in Portugal, Benfica and Porto is an amazing game. So I know what
they mean.

“They are a very compact team,” he added. “They defend very well and they
are dangerous because they have some fast and quality players up front. So I am

The London derby factor apart, there is another popularly given reason why
Sunday’s game will be held up as a tall hurdle to clear in Chelsea’s
championship race. That is the ‘European hangover’ often said to be suffered
by teams returning from playing abroad. It is not a theory to which Mourinho
subscribes.

He said: “My experience is that normally teams don’t perform well when coming
back from the national team rather than the Champions League.

For Tottenham, recent signing Michael Carrick is out with an ankle injury while

summer surgery having followed up a short sub appearance in the last game with
action in the reserves.
