BIG-MATCH FACTS
CHELSEA may have lost their 100% record when held to a goalless draw by Aston
Villa last week, but they bounced back with a convincing 0-3 victory against
Paris St Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and are now ready to
face London rivals Tottenham, who have never beaten them in Premiership history.
The Blues are undefeated under Jose Mourinho and have conceded just one goal
since the Portuguese coach took charge. They're protecting a 100% home
Premiership record, challenging for a fifth successive victory at Stamford
Bridge, and need all three points to keep pace with last season's start when
they bagged 16 points from the first six games.
Frederic Kanoute gave Spurs the lead in this corresponding fixture almost
exactly a year ago. That advantage lasted just 10 minutes before Frank Lampard
headed the equaliser and then Adrian Mutu turned the game around three minutes
later. The Romanian then sealed the victory with his second goal. It eventually
ended 4-2 in what turned out to be Glenn Hoddle's penultimate match in charge
of the White Hart Lane club.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR are also unbeaten under a new coach. Frenchman Jacques
Santini has seen his charges win two and draw three of their first five games.
Now they must break a 14 year hoodoo and the biggest jinx in modern
top-division football. They have not beaten their local rivals in 28 League
matches, losing eight and drawing four of the 12 Premiership visits to the
Bridge. They've lost 21 of 33 League and Cup contests home and away with the
glamour side from the west end. (Their only win coming in a League Cup tie at
White Hart Lane in January 2002.)
Spurs missed out on the chance to move into third place, when held to a
goalless draw by Norwich last time out. On the road, the north Londoners have
failed to score in five of the last nine top flight encounters.
Spurs' last victory at Stamford Bridge was 1-2 in the old First Division on 10
February 1990 when David Howells and Gary Lineker were on the scoresheet.
Referee: Mike Riley (Leeds)
