http://www.cfc-net.co.uk/content/results_detail.asp?ID=4978 It was in December last year that Sam Allardyce’s Bolton side came to Stamford Bridge and put a chink in Chelsea’s Premiership armour with a 2-1 victory. Jose Mourinho will not want a repeat performance from his table-topping players this Saturday. As unlikely as that may sound, few thought it conceivable that a Bolton side would win at Stamford Bridge last season. They achieved it through a bizarre John Terry own goal in the closing minutes that just went to show the vagaries of the game and that complacency will cost you at the highest level. Mourinho has doubtless not heard of the word ‘complacent’. The thorough approach of the new coach has seen Chelsea glide to the top of the table, losing just once this season. Whilst last season’s Chelsea appeared to always leave an ounce of doubt for their opponents to exploit; Mourinho’s team is as ruthless and confident as any on current evidence. Much of this is due to Arjen Robben’s positive influence on the side. When Fulham drew level at 1-1 last weekend, the Dutchman stormed to the opposite end of the field to restore the lead almost immediately. Robben has now scored in each of his last four appearances and is truly a star in the making. Not that this should detract from the efforts of his peers however. Frank Lampard has found the form of last season and, some would say, a little bit extra. His ability to drive the side partly explains Chelsea’s recent resurgence. John Terry has also raised his game. Although imperious for the past two seasons at the heart of the Blues’ defence, it says a lot for the skipper that he is now indi spensable in a side comprised of multi-million pound signings. His partnership with Ricardo Carvalho has developed rapidly into a more than acceptable alternative to the Terry-William Gallas pairing admired by so many for the past two seasons. Bolton themselves are a top five side. Whilst not in the same bracket as Arsenal or Chelsea, they have made steady progress under Sam Allardyce and along with Everton can justifiably be considered the overachievers of the Premiership. The Northeners’ game is based upon power and strength with a blend of class from certain areas of the field. The likes of Kevin Nolan, Gary Speed and Kevin Davies provide the gritty side of the Bolton game, whilst Jay Jay Okocha, Ricardo Gardner and El-Hadji Diouf provide the pace and flair. Okocha’s reputation rightly precedes the great Nigerian and he has been one of the stars of the division in recent years. Gardner however is less of a ‘fashionable’ name but is certainly one to watch. The Jamaican’s pace was devastating at the Bridge last year and Paulo Ferreira will need to be watchful this weekend. Chelsea are unlikely to change their recent approach given its success. Damien Duff and Robben should play off Eidur Gudjohnsen in attack, whilst Lampard and Claude Makelele will partner either Scott Parker or Tiago in the midfield. Terry and Carvalho should line up alongside Ferreira and Gallas although Wayne Bridge will want his place back having played for England in midweek. Bolton will once again come to spoil the party. Allardyce’s game plan should revolve heavily around the pace of El-Hadji Diouf and any set pieces that should come the way of his men. Chelsea meanwhile will look to continue their rich vein of form and extend their winning run to nine games. Home advantage should inevitably tell this time around, though Robben and co. will as ever need to be at their best to brush aside another hard working side.
