Reaction: Henry free-kick fury dominates aftermath

Jose Mourinho was furious at referee Graham Poll’s role in Thierry Henry’s
second goal – one of those quickly taken free-kicks that seems to exploit a
rule that is as clear as mud.


He would not elaborate for fear of FA recriminations, saying simply: “I am
more than unhappy; unhappy is nice word. I cannot say the word that is in my
heart and soul. I know the rules and they are the same anywhere in the world,
from top league to under-15  football.”

He revealed his anger was fuelled by an official presentation made to
Chelsea’s players and staff in the summer on the rules regarding free kicks.


“In pre-season we had a top referee at Harlington with a screen, projector
and presentation and an explanation of the rules,” he said, “so there is no
doubt about it. One of the things he explained was walls, distance, whistle.
Everything was clear. It was a top referee sent to Harlington by the ref
committee. Today nothing.”

A frustrated Arsene Wenger almost sympathised with his opposite number.


“As strange as the rule looks to me as well, it was a goal,” he said. “I
don’t really agree with the rule but that’s the rule. It looked like the
ref had a chat with Thierry whether he wanted a wall. It has happened to us.”

Overall, though, Jose was content with the performance and pragmatic at the
outcome. “It’s a result to keep the distance,” he shrugged. “It was a
good chance for them to get two points behind. And for us to go eight points
ahead. So now we gave Manchester United a chance to close the gap a little
bit.

The Chelsea boss’s tactics helped achieve the draw, especially his side’s
utter dominance of offensive set-pieces and the switch to an attacking 4-2-4
at half-time. But he wanted to heap praise on his side’s spirit.


“It’s true we scored two goals in set plays,” he said. “And we had two
other good chances, with Lampard who had a free header, and Gallas two metres
out had a good opportunity to score.

“At half time I was unhappy with [the score]  because we were losing. I was

really hurts. I thought Wayne Bridge could give us something more going
forward than William Gallas.

Jose then looked to the title chase. “It’s the same distance,” he said.

Arsenal, Man U. I think Liverpool after yesterday are a little but too far.”

everybody,” he reasoned. “We know we can lose points against anyone, you
never know. You cannot sleep on the points. We have two matches at home now
and if we win those two matches we are a little closer.
