LAMPARD SORRY FOR ALONSO TACKLE
Steve Hunter 02 January 2005
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has apologised to Xabi Alonso and Liverpool
for the tackle which left the Spanish international with a broken ankle.
Lampard was booked for the challenge which puts Alonso out of action for six
weeks.
Lampard said: "I'm disappointed because Alonso broke his ankle which is just
horrible. I didn't mean to do that at all and I apologise to the player and
hope he will back soon."

Lamps hails Jose impact
by Alex Livie - Last Updated 2 Jan 2005
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes Jose Mourinho has instilled a
winning mentality at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer, after leading Porto to
UEFA Champions League glory, and he has led Chelsea on a superb run.
The Blues are five points clear in The Premiership, through to the knockout
stages of the Champions League and still pitching in the Carling Cup.
Lampard claims it is time he lifted some silverware with Chelsea and feels
Mourinho has provided the players with a new mental attitude.
"I've taken part in a European Championship, Champions League games and
semi-finals, and we finished second in the league," Lampard told BBC London.
"Now we're top of the league, I've scored a lot of goals on the way and I've
really enjoyed my football.
"That's a massively important thing. I'm enjoying where I'm living and I'm
enjoying playing for a club I feel really attached to, so it's good,
probably as good as it's been for me.
"And I'm just hoping the next year can be even better.
"The manager really has worked hard on installing that mentality of winning
- of hopefully winning the league and hopefully winning the cups.
"That is obvious to see in our matches. There's a real desire, there's a
real spirit amongst the lads, we're all together, we all want to win.
"Even if people are on the bench, or not playing very often, they're still
in there, fighting for the lads. So that's something you have to give the
manager, and the team around him, massive credit for, because they're all
working in the same direction."
Lampard also reserved words of praise for former Blues chief Claudio Ranieri,
but feels Mourinho has taken them to the next level.
"We had a great season without winning anything and that left us in a
situation this year where we have even more determination, even more hunger
and desire, to not just have the great squad that nearly wins everything,"
the England midfiel der added. "We want a squad that will definitely
win something."
